Folks:
Please go through the mail below. I saw a posting in another e-group
about a "software to scan and read books for the blind". I immediately
wrote to the gentleman below and got this response. Hope it's useful.

Dear Mr.Subramani
Thank you for your email. We are delighted that you as a journalist and
Deccan Herald the well known news paper are taking interest in this
activity of ours which is helping visually disadvantaged.
1. The book reading software is not developed by us, but is imported. We
believe that this is the first such installation in India. . It is
expensive and we do not foresee it being used by individuals. We have
installed it so that we can copy (book read) rare books and play to
blind and low vision persons. Once it is read by the software it will
load in to any computer and the user who may be blind or low vision can
play it leisure and listen to it.
2. We have several other devices ,software and methods develpoed by
us,with which we can equip blind and low vision persons in India at
nominal cost (because we subsidize them) They are as under.
A. Camera mouse : This ia a device with which even acute low vision
person can read news papers and books on a domestic TV. This device
costs only Rs.2000 (50 to 75% cheaper than contemporary global devices).
We strongly suggest that you make a feature on this Camera Mouse in
Deccan Herald. We can supply you an exclusive story and pictures.
Further NAB Karnataka and Christofher Blinden Mission (CBM) both in
Bangalore have purchased this device from us.
B. We developed Reading Stands and Magnifiers for low vision persons.
These are supplied at subsidized prices which are ranging from Rs.300 to
900 only. We can supply you pictures on this.
C. We train low vision as well as totally blind persons in computer
applications and have specially designed courses for them in several
levels and these courses are offered at subsidized prices ranging from
Rs.150 to Rs. 900 only. We tuttor the blind and low vision persons by
using individual computers and tutors. We supply demo software and
lierature to students free so that they can work from their homes after
graduation
We are doing all the above activities on a no profit , non commercial
basis and even subsidize them, in tthe interest of helping visually
disadvantaged. According to our belief we are the only such
comprehensive centre in India.
It will be very appropriate if you can send a reporter to whom we will
give all material, pictures and access, for an exclusive story and
feature in Deccan Herald.
If you are unable to send any one to Visaklhapatnam, we will arrange a
volunteer free lance journalist to collect details and supply to you. We
will like Deccan Herald to take a lead in this matter and spread the
services to the visually disadvantaged.
Please give your postal address to which we can send literature about
our organisation.
Please also seriously consider making a feature in Deccan Herald in the
lines suggested above.
Thanking you once again
Sincerely
M.S.Raju
