Dear All,
It is heartwarming to witness growing numbers of companies are
celebrating international day of person with disability. While
government has initiated many measures for improving lives of Pwd;
have we ever reflected how we are being member of the PwD community
has contributed towards inclusive nation building.
I had recent incident which I would like to share. There are many IAS
(Indian Administrative service Officer) within PwD including blind.
Rajesh singh, blind IAS who was inducted through court intervention
and I had the privilege of meeting him at NIVH Dehradun where I along
with him was recipient of NIVH Excellence award. He was completing
his training at IAS academy. I learned that he was posted at Bokaro,
Jharkhand as district Collector. I got his number and spoke to him as
well as planned to meet him during my Bokaro visit in the first week
of October2020. He gave me an appointment at 7:30 PM and his office
was 20KM away from where I was staying. I was shocked to discover
that neither Security nor his Personal Assistance (PA) was aware that
I was going to come to meet him. After waiting for hour and half along
with my 9 years old daughter; PA came and inform me to come next day
at 11:30 AM. Sadly, Rajesh did not bother to even give me a call and
I could not visit him due to prior engagement at that time. I have
met several Central government top IAS officers including few union
secretaries. Wait is acceptable but calling and humiliation is
certainly not acceptable. Later on I learned through various sources
that I was not alone. He does not like to meet any member of Pwd
community and he strongly discourage blind folks to prepare for IAS in
the past. Imagine if folks such as Rajesh become Joint Secretary of
Department of empowerment; policies for PWD would be formulated based
on just his understanding and miss out the real ground situation.
Sadly, success literally blind us to a position where we don’t even
want to interact with our fellow community member.
However, I am still very optimistic because we have great sensitive
people like Ajay Arora sir who is blind IAS who would contribute
immensely for inclusive nation building. Appealing to all Pwd
community members to continue to collaborate and work for
strengthening in building inclusive India.
Jai Hind
Asif
