The issue is resolved now, so I guess that was some kind of a technical glitch on part of gmail. I don't think that they'll be doing away with basic html view anytime soon, cause in lot of geographical locations, access to high speed internet is still a distant dream. Owing to this problem, facebook also launched facebook light some years ago which consumes very less data.
