Plea for regular training to airline staff for handling disabled pax / TNN / May 20, 2022, 11:24 IST MUMBAI: The recent IndiGo Ranchi incident involving a disabled child who was denied boarding has led to an online petition which urges airlines to conduct bi-monthly awareness sessions on handling passengers with disabilities. IndiGo said that it already conducts such training and is looking at more ways to improve passenger handling.“As someone who has a partial hearing disability, I can imagine the humiliation the child and his parents have gone through,” said the petition put up by disability rights activist Namrata Sharma on change.org early this week. Speaking to TOI, Sharma said that she has endured rude behavior from airline staff, especially at airport check-in counters. “If airlines can’t implement government norms and bring about a change, despite all the infrastructure and means they have then what can we expect from railways and buses,” she added. The petition said that IndiGo and other airlines should conduct the mandatory bi-monthly awareness session as laid down in government norms. Airlines should also carry out an internal audit immediately to ensure all staff learn from the Ranchi case and treat the differently-abled with dignity, it said. ndiGo in a statement said :"We already have world class trainings for our employees including specialised trainings for managing people with any kind of disabilities institutionalised at IndiGo as per global standards. Every experience with any customer is a learning for us and we are constantly looking at ways to upgrade and better ourselves in all areas."In October last year, dancer and actor Sudhaa Chandran, an amputee had posted a video statement posted on a social media platform saying she is made to remove her prosthetic limb to clear airport security every time.
