GUWAHATI: Aspiring college teachers with physical disabilities in Assam
will have to face medical boards mandatorily to prove their infirmity level
before getting a job.
Sources in the education department told TOI that in view of complaints of
adopting fraudulent means to acquire Persons with Disability (PwD)
certificates, screening by medical boards has become a new norm to filter
the genuine candidates.
On Wednesday, 37 candidates with disabilities were sent to Gauhati Medical
College Hospital (GMCH) even though they had already acquired the
certificates which “verify their disabilities”.
Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had asked the state education department
to screen the specially-abled employees, who were appointed last year, by a
medical board. This was followed by appointment of 280 specially-abled
candidates in July for the first time after screening through a medical
board.
“The education department feels that screening through a medical board has
become necessary to ensure that the candidates are specially-abled. The PwD
certificates alone can not ensure credibility of the claims of the
candidates,” said a senior official of the state higher education
directorate.
