Anirudh, all, I was talking about the vOICe. It is a program that converts live images to sound. You can then do pattern recognition in your head and determine what you are looking at.
The electrical signals that your brain gets when hearing these sounds are the same as those it gets when receiving light from organic eyes. The vOICe works on the principal of sensory substitution where it replaces sound with vision. There is no artificial intelligence involved. Programs such as envision, supersense etc., use artificial intelligence to do things like object recognition. You should think of artificial intelligence as a way for a computer to solve a problem and not as the adding of human like intelligence.
