Hello, it is true that most of our problems arise more due to the lack of
awairness on the part of the sighted persons than our disability. Those of us,
who are well-placed in society have to take an initiative in creating and
promoting this awairness. In my college I had aranged one such event and had
invited Mr. Suhas Karnik to speak on this issue. I myself have delivered
several lectures in schools and colleges not only almost all over Maharashtra
but also in Goa and Karnataka. While doing so, our approach should be that of
orienting and explaining people rather than of blaming or criticizing them. We
must actively participate in different public activities and functions. I have
done very little work in institutes working for the blind. But for the last 45
years I have worked as an advocate of the blind.

it is a very good suggestion indeed.

I have studied in an inclusive college and teach in a private college now.
I had to go through a lot of struggles especially while convincing the
management to take me as a faculty as they were unaware of the disability and
were doubtful.
the question is not whether they understand the whole content of the lectures
but, it would give an exposure to the participants to the realm of disability.

    Hello all,
Hope everyone is in great health.
Few days ago, I read saksham's mail about the accessibility events at LPU
on this group.
It is a great initiative, I feel.
On that, I got an idea, such kind of events should be held in as many
colleges as possible.
There should be organisations that go and demonstrate assistive
technologies and give lectures on problems faced by the disabled and available
solutions.
For example, I study at Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce, Pune.
People there are quite helpful, they will assist you if you ask and even
approach you themselves, if they see you struggling in anyway.
However, no one exactly knows about assistive technologies much and how
blind people exactly function.
Most know only few things, the blind cane, braille (maybe some) and have
weird myths like blind people have some super cense.
A pessimistic thought could be that, sited are not interested in all of
this, but I believe that some will be, only they don't know much about all of
this.
I had to make an audio clip explaining how does a screen reader work and
share on my whatsap group because people weren't understanding, how am I using
a phone.
I know the mail has gotten a bit long, but I felt a need to put out this
suggestion.
If blind and sited collaborate somehow, it could bring out even better
results.

    Regards,
    Saurav Hegde
