While DoubleTalk had an electronic voice compared to today’s human-sounding speech engines, it was a bit more human-sounding compared to many of its competitors of that time. Its pronunciation was good, it had, to my ear, a very calming voice, it was very responsive and the hardware was inexpensive. There is now a DoubleTalk emulation available as an NVDA add-on.
