Back in the 1990s, ASAP became my DOS screen reader of choice, along with the DoubleTalk synthesizer. While DoubleTalk had an electronic voice compared to today’s human-sounding speech engines, it was a bit more human-sounding compared to many of its competitors of that time. Its pronunciation was good, it had, to my ear, a very calming voice, it was very responsive and the hardware was inexpensive. There is now a DoubleTalk emulation available as an NVDA add-on. It’s remarkable as it is quite responsive and using it takes me back to a time when computing was very different compared to the way it is today. >From Jake Gross via Mastodon … A software emulation of the Doubletalk PC is now available as an NVDA addon.
