hello and a very warm good afternoon to accessindia i have some very interesting news for all of us.
the NVDA ( non visual desktop access ) has just lonched the latest release version ( NVDA 6.02p ) as always, NVDA still comes in 2 forms the installer ( for stationary usage at single pc like ( jaws ) and, the portable version that you can carry anywhere you go with you. i my self likes the robustness and ease of use interface of the portable version, and i'm gonna talk little bit about it today. the official website for downloads and other information is, www.nvda-project.org the NVDA is still is very young ( around 2 years ) and hence, do not compare it with other specialized costly screenreaders. the biggest advantage is, it is an open source project, ( which means many brains can work on the development of the project and its freeware) for those of you, who are really very adventurous ( like me )and would like to try out the latest revisions of NVDA, can go to snatShot link from the download page note: per day, due to many ideas and updates, we get 3/4 revision daily so, update only once in month. for rest of us, the stable version, NVDA 6.02p will work perfectly. by creating autorun.inf file, and writing it to USB /cd drive, 1 can just plug in cd/ USB drive and any computer having sound card, and drivers for display and sound properly installed ( which is, at most pc's) can instantly get speech my own personal experience with NVDA :- the program is created in python with support from different libraries , and since i've started useing it, it have never crashed on me. ( highly stable ) you should read the files that are included in docks folder, different language sub folders are present, select eng, and read key commands, and other help files. when you download the portable version and run the .exe file, note, that please give proper path ( not doing that, it will unzip all 45 files in present folder) i'm saying so, because i ended up in unzipping all files in " my documents folder" after running the setup for the portable version, just give it a simple path such as C:\NVDA_portable then, go at the extracted folder, and run NVDA.exe the insert key by default is the NVDA key ( like jaws) and insert + n is the option for going to NVDA menu please explore the preferences sub menu, and adjust the speech synthesizer speech rate, etc. for me, the microsoft sappy 4.0 serotek eloquents speech synthesizer works like jaws. oh, and yeah. the autorun file to automaticly start NVDA and access any computer without help of any1 can be done in the following way. ( of corse, NVDA is hundred times better then narrator) note, in following steps, the extracted NVDA folder is named as NVDA_portable due to security reasons, it will not directly run from a USB drive, but with CD, it will. to create autorun.inf ( optional step) open note pad and copy following text into it. [autorun] open=nvda_portable\nvda.exe action=nvda_portable\nvda.exe shell\nvda=enable speach shell\nvda\command=nvda_portable\nvda.exe save this file at root of CD or u s b drive with a name autorun.inf it will also create a menu when you hit applications key at your removable drive, you can see an extra option named " enable speech" by hitting enter on it, NVDA will start speaking and by default, in the case of a CD, as soon as you insert the CD into the drive, with in 15 sec, nvda will automaticly get activated if you cant create autorun or it doesn't works, please drop me an email and i'll be glad to create 1 for you. important: , the nvda_portable folder and this autorun.inf file have to stay at root of your drive. since i'm closely working with the developers and is a community member, if you want, you can also directly contact me at my email address and drop in your suggestions.
