Well, cramming becomes essential when one does not fully understand the 
subject one is studying. Try to understand whatever you are studying, so 
that you will be able to reproduce that in your own words during the exams. 
You will then only need to note down points -- about five or ten points per 
chapter -- and then go through them on the day of the exam. One other tip 
that might help is to cultivate enthusiasm for whatever you are studying. 
Being interested in something invariably helps you remember it better.
