Hello all, Armed with the RBI circulars, I visited the SBI branch close to my house this morning. The manager of this branch is a rather elderly gentleman with very conservative views. He insisted that it would not be possible for me to open an account with them if my signatures on the form do not tally. He then looked at the form that I had filled up and was a little pacified. He however continued insisting that they cannot issue a checkbook to me, although I informed him that I already had a Citibank account with a checkbook. He further wanted me to find someone who has an account at the same branch and who could introduce me to the bank. On informing him that we did not know anyone with an account there, he was agitated and said that the bank rules should be followed. We finally relented and resigned to finding someone. However, the new account form did not have a slot for the signature of the person introducing the new customer. When we pointed this out to the manager, he made frantic queries, telling everyone he called that this was an indispensible step. He was however finally informed by another officer that the bank had done away with introductions. This clearly shows how ill-informed managers are about procedures in their own banks, not to mention RBI rules.
Anyhow, contrary to the manager, the officer responsible for opening new accounts was very nice and even offered us a cup of tea! He completed the procedure in a jiffy and made no fuss about my signature or ATM card. Although I had no occasion to use them, the RBI circulars can be of great help when opening new accounts.
