Hi Amar, I am using Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 10 and J-Say to dictate this message. Speech recognition software can indeed be very accurate. However, for accuracy, you need to ensure that certain conditions are met. You need to have a system that is powerful enough to run the speech recognition program secondly, you need to use a noise cancelling microphone that has been specially designed for speech recognition software.
As for taking an exam with the programme, a lot would depend on your comfort with using speech recognition software. by comfort I mean, how familiar are you with the working of the speech recognition program. I have found that though dictating and giving commands is faster than typing, editing documents a slower as compared to using a keyboard. These days, I follow a hybrid approach. Whenever I can, I use speech recognition. Where I can't, for example, where I need to do some extremely rapid editing, I use the keyboard. For using speech recognition software, you have 2 options. The first option is using Dragon NaturallySpeaking with J-Say. For this, you also need to have a registered version of Jaws For Windows. The other option you have is to use the system access screen reader with windows vista. Be warned that though Windows Vista has speech recognition, it does not have Indian English as an option. Dragon NaturallySpeaking however does have Indian English.
