Dear Bangalore members,
thanks a lot for the appreciation. On behalf of CIS and personally I would like to say that it was wonderful having you all over and getting to know in person names I have been coming across for so many years. I hope we can do this again soon. I would especially like to thank those of you who came from out of town. After all, regardless of how you arrange things- an event is not a success without its participants.
Cheers, Nirmita

Why do you want a wireless keyboard? Assuming that you will be moving around with a laptop, the base unit of the wireless keyboard will be an additional
item to carry. Also, most of these base units require an additional power
supply.

1 Job portal for disabled people
A job portal for persons with disabilities has been launched at
Bengaluru. The Department of Welfare of Disabled people and Senior
Citizens in collaboration with Partners in Change (PIC), a
non-goverrnmental organization, has developed a website that will
enable persons with disabilities to look for employment opportunities
in various sectors.
Speaking to press persons, M.V. Vedamurthy, Director, said: ?around
36000 persons with disabilities have enrolled themselves with the
employment exchange and the department is collecting their details and
will put this up on the website. Companies willing to recruit disabled
persons can visit the website and get information on eligible
candidates?.
The website, www.karnatakapwdjobs.com will allow persons with
disabilities to hunt for jobs anywhere in India and provides of
companies to post their jobs free of charge.
According to Mr. Vedamurthy, the department is implementing the
rural rehabilitation scheme that would provide jobs to 5828 persons as
well as enable persons with disabilities to avail themselves of all
the schemes and benefits they were entitled to from the different
departments at their doorstep through the rural rehabilitation workers
at the gram panchayat level. The govverrnment had sanctioned Rs 5.92/-
crore for this programme, he added.

2 Website launched for the benefit of the disabled
a website has been launched by Udis Forum, a network facilitating
employment of persons with disabilities and Aes Technologies (India)
Private Limited to facilitate information exchange between
organizations working for persons with disabilities here recently. The
website, Disability Alliance, of Voluntary organizations (www.davo.in)
wich, went online on December 30, contains profiles of institutions
working in the disability sector, current development in the
disability welfare, job opportunities for people with disabilities and
Goverrnment initiatives and schemes. Formally launching the website,
J. J. Jesuraj, District Disabled Rehabilitation officer, said it would
provide an excellent platform for the vvoluntary organizations to
exchange their resources.
President of the Forum, M.N.G. Mani, said the website would provide
news on international trends and innovative practices in disability
management. ?a screening committee consisting of representatives of
leading voluntary organizations and disabled persons has been
constituted to review the contents of the website regularly,? Mr. Mani
said.
The website would be a source for parents, persons with
disabilities, professionals, and the public to find out about the
training facilities available for children and adults with
disabilities, employment counseling.
thanks,
mukesh jain.

Folks:

The Bangalore off-line AI meeting, which took place today at the CIS
(Centre for Internet and Society) campus, was a resounding success. More
than 20 AI members from different parts of the country were present to
listen to four presentations made by IVolunteers, 3i Infotec, Area Pal
and Inclusive Planet. All the presenters spoke about their
services/products/organisations, but it proved to be useful for those
present. For instance, the I Volunteer presentation opened the way for
many to either request for volunteer help (as disability services is one
of 12 areas for which the organisation helped with volunteers).
Obviously, those present were interested in reading/scanning books and
other related services.

Interestingly, the idea of digital signatures, which the 3i Infotec
representative dealt with, prompted discussion on using digital
signatures as a means of certifying disabled persons who wanted to buy
railway tickets online. In fact, Sanjeev, the representative, was even
positive that it can be done.

Kavi Raj, who is from Area Pal, explained how their online platform
linked people in the same neighbourhood/campus and helped them exchange
news and information relevant to them. Rounding up the interesting
evening was Sachin from Inclusive Planet, who spoke about readable, an
accessible online space where (V I) folks can upload/download books and
share the books they have. He said the site already contains about 15000
ebooks and asked for contribution. Integral Planet, which looks at
services from the disability perspective, is poised to introduce spaces
for restaurant/public place ratings (on the basis of their
accessibility) and matrimonial services for the disabled where the
emphasis will be on their abilities.

Overall, the evening was made more funny and interesting by our hostess
Nirmita Narasimhan (on behalf of CIS), who introduced her organisation
to the audience and also took the job of making us all hear our voices
for the first time (by letting us introduce ourselves). Thanks to
Nirmita and Geetha's efforts and hard work, the event is a success. And,
of course, we shouldn't forget the place and snacks provided by CIS and
the wonderful support of their staff in escorting us back and forth the
building.

Subramani
