Dear Govind,

To add to Harish's email-
1. Knitting and crochet are possible. Lots of fashion garments are now knitted or crochetted. However hand work is expensive and you have to find the right market for the sale of such garments.

2. She can create clothes but she would find it very difficult to copy designs from a book.

3. Similarily she can do embroidery but she cant do it on already traced patterns. However it is a painful and painstaking process.

4. A fashion designer has to understand the body of the person who is going to wear the garment this may be possible but difficult because she has to understand the image as well as the curves which means hse must touch which may not be liked by clients/patrons.

5. She will have to understand the fabric and its fall which she can manage.
6. She will have to do the initial cutting this is what makes the difference between a good and an Ok professional in her field. 7. She has to do a lot more like stitching, hemming etc. for which neatness is required. 8. No amount of current technology and my apolagies to this group, will allow her to make a judgement on what matches with what and what looks slightly better than the other.

9. I would suggest she think of alternatives since she is still young. However I am ready to take back my words if we can find a viable career for this young woman. Please ask her what part of fashion designing does she really like-the drawing, playing with fabric, the stitching or the dressing. Would she look at fashion acessories instead of the dress itself?

10. My answer would be different if she was in her mid 30's. This is because by then she would be able to visualise without needing to see everything. many parts of her work would become automatic. 11. Also you must check the internet for someone with the same challenges working in the field. This may help your friend.

12. I am forwarding your mail to a friend who is a Fashion designer and knows the problem of the visually challenged. Lets see if she can come up with a better answer.
Regards
Kanchan

Hi Govind

The most important thing is how passionate is she about fashion designing and embroidery.

This is totally visually rich and this can be both limiting and liberating.
It all depends on which of the 2 ones consider it to be important.

Technology persay would be of little assistance except for colour recognition. It more goes how you manage the difficulties. One should organise the coloured items like threads in a wayyou know which colour it is without really seeing it.

Designs and patterns are something you can imagine and it is what you would be commiting to the material.

It would be difficult to learn these after loosing sight, however, once having learnt the art it can be done with some difficulty factored in.

Another strategy is to apply the basic skills to another form which is more manageable.

I will not be able to suggest precisely as I know little about it.

If you can master the seeing with sound, this can be a good technology which can be of assistance.

Govind, there are 2 things you need to know. Firstly gauge her passion levels and make her believe she can make it. Only she should be look at it differently.

Subject: [AI] Any fashion designers and dress material designers amongVisually impaired?

Dear list members:
Are there any visually impaired who is in to fashion designing and
embroidery (Dress material designing)? One of my friends has lost her
site when she was around 20. When she was able to see, she learned
fashion designing course, & even now works in same field with the very
little sight she has. She can partially identify the colours. Now she
wants to know if any technology exists for computerized course in
fashion designing & dress material designing.
My doubt is that what r the tools and programs commonly used for
fashion designing and dress material designing. I need all the info if
you have with you, even a little info is enough.
Your kind help will highly be appriciated.
