As a journalist, I need not tell you the way people lobby for or against technologies. I have been a netbook user for the past year or so and I must tell you that it is definitely a fantastic alternative to desktop in many aspects. For instance, you have more than 160 GB hard disk space, which is certainly better than the PC I had purchased five years ago which has just 40 gb. Besides, I have pretty much everything I have on the PC, though we need to revalue if netbook is still a viable option in the post 3G era.

Although my phone is certainly not the latest and greatest, (they become obsolete the day you buy them), anyone considering a netbook could also look at a high-end cell phone that would give even more portability and depending on what you need, just as much functionality.
