HI Swasthi Mathur, Here are the answers to your questions.
Training; Most banks don't offer any sort of special training to visually challenged employees. They are trained at par with other employees in general banking. Very few banks like Punjab National Bank have offered training to visually challenged employees on working with screen readers and provided those employees with computers with screen readers. But I am not aware of the work allotted to such employees after the training. Screen readers: This is an area where banks have been inconsistent within and amongst them. Some banks have allowed usage of screen readers in some places whereas prohibits such activity in other places. This is common in almost all the banks. For example, SBI has provided Jaws to it's employees in Banglore but employees in Hyderabad haven't been given such facility. Work allotted: This is intertwined with the above aspect. Visually challenged can do very little without a computer. So, they are mostly used in enquiry counters, telephone operations etc. To sum it up, provision of screen readers and work allotment is dependent upon the superior's attitude and ability of the employee to convince him. In most cases, the former plays the more crucial role. Visually challenged employees are under utilised in banks. But things are improving, especially in the recent years with the recruitment of young employees in many banks. And the number of visually challenged getting into banks, which is fairly large, has played an instrumental role in this progress. I am confident that things will become lot better in years to come. All the information provided is based on my experience as a banker and as a member of a group called Visually impaired bankers of India, which has been formed to improve the productivity of VI employees working in the financial sector. Contact me for further information on my mobile and I will be more than happy to discuss this further with you. -- G.
