Dear Harish, instead of Bluetooth if we opt for GPRS,do we have to pay
additional charges? Do we automatically find maps for all places? For
example if you come to Dombivali, will you be able to find out my house?
This service is used only while driving or we can also use it while walking
on the road? if yes, can it tell us about the standing poles, trees, open
manholes etc on the road? Can the voice be audible on noisy roads?

Using Nokia Maps with Talks V 5.0
I am giving the following steps based on my Nokia E72 model. The items may
be called differently and may be under folders with a different name. You
may have to figure it out yourself. I haven't installed any other third
party GPS software and using with the GPS application bundled by Nokia.
The first step is to enable the GPS receiver. Presently I have not taken
GPRS services which means I am not taking internet support at all. Now I
do have an external blue tooth receiver in addition to the build in GPS
receiver. This will not have any impact in the effective use of the GPS
navigation.
For GPS Receiver settings
1 goto control panel, settings, General, positioning.
2 Select positioning methods and select the choices appropriate to you. If
you have an external blue tooth GPS receiver then check it. If you have
GPRS connection then you can consider selecting assisted GPS it as well,
if you plan to use the internal GPS then select the integrated GPS, IF you
are in an area where you would get WI FI network, then you may select this
as well. I have selected Blue tooth and integrated GPS.
For GPS navigation
1 Go to Application, GPS, Landmarks
2Press Key 1 option, new landmark
3 You are given 3 choices, a) current position b) select from map c) enter
manually. The first and the third choice can be done by a totally blind
person easily. Give this landmark a meaningful name.
3 Select the landmark from the list, press Key 1 and select show route.
4You have again 3 choices, a) add new route point, b GPS status c) The
landmark name you have selected.
5 Monitor what appears in GPS status, if you get a message no gps
connection, no GPS position, this means the reciever has not picked the
requisite satellites at that point of time, you need to keep waiting for
more time. If you do pick up requisite satellites the GPS status shows
accordingly and the name of the road you are on.
6 If you get good GPS status then you press Key 1 for start driving or
start walking . To change walk or driving guidance press right cursor key
and select accordingly.
7 The default on my phone is car navigation with UK female English. You
can also select Hindi or tamil voices without downloading from the net.
7 For finding points of interest, refer step 4 above and select add new
route point.
8Press Key 1 and select search from. Here you will get 9 categories like
automotive, transport, museums etc, select the appropriate category and
you shall get places of interest. Select the place and continue on step 5
above.
Observations:
1 The voice is not a synthesized voice and it is easy to be understood by
anyone.
2 It gives a turn by turn navigation
3 If you miss a turn or deliberately prefer to take a different route, it
will automatically recalculate and guide from that point onwards.
4 It gives sufficient response time to act on the instructions.
5 The route is fairly good and I have not really gone anywhere based
exclusively on its guidance. I had kept it on while travelling and it is
interesting how quickly it recalculates and the vehicle take the turn and
this announces before hand.
6 On highways it usually keeps announcing periodically to follow course.
For most part from rishikesh to Badrinath I went recently, it kept
repeating the same message throughout the distance. When our car happen
to go in a stretch of private road where the highway had breached due to a
landslide it kept saying no road. It also gave me the same message no road
while I was at Andaman recently. I had also kept it on while flying back
from Port Blair to Mumbai, interestingly it started to give driving
guidance as soon as we flew over Chennai. I had selected driving guidance
to Mumbai airport.
7 I had not loaded any maps on the phone and interestingly it picked it up
by itself when in different part of the country.
8 For the first time it can take a good deal of time as much as an hour in
the open for it do acquire satellites. However the waiting time comes down
subsequently. This time for acquiring the satellites can be improved by
opting for GPRS and Assisted GPS
9 External Blue tooth GPS reciever is better comparatively with faster
satellite acquiring time and greater sensitiveness. It is also less
straining on the phone battery. However, it is not easily available here
and there is an additional cost involved.
