It has been involved in the advocacy for the rights of persons with disabilities for almost a decade at both state and national levels and has got a few very important case laws on disability. We have focused on education, employment, accessibility, rehabilitation, awareness building programs, social inclusion of disabled in all walks of life, and bringing the disability perspective in the mainstream. Visit our website to know more about us. www.sambhavana.in http://www.sambhavana.in/node/8 This year, we are celebrating the "International Day of Persons with Disabilities" (December 3rd) at Gandhi Peace Foundation, New Delhi. We are organizing a full day program, which will have three major sessions. First session focuses on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Legal Framework (Limitations and Possibilities) and the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The context of such an emphasis is evident in the ratification of UNCRPD by the Indian Government, formation of a National Committee to draft new disability law and the on-going discussions about corporate social responsibility. All three have their separate as well as joint nuances, critical dimensions and implications for disability sector. Second session would center on the Need for Constitutional Amendment to include persons with disability and their rights in the Indian Constitution. In the course of our struggle, we have experienced it at many occasions that although in our success, a considerable role has been performed by the judiciary, there are no explicit and specific provisions in the Constitution of India to ensure positive discrimination or even equal rights for persons with disabilities. As distinct from our largest democracy (which has although ratified the UNCRPD), many newly constituted democratic states of Africa have guarantied constitutional protection to the rights of this marginalized section of their population. Keeping this in view, we have drafted (in consultation with many eminent personalities and law experts) a petition for amendment in the Constitution of India to include disabled and their rights in the Indian Constitution. We will upload it on our website and launch an online signature campaign from 3rd December 2010 onwards. We would request you to be amongst the initial signatories on this petition. Third session will feature disability related mobile-shot films. For arranging this session, Sambhavana has been presently organizing a competition of short mobile films on disability primarily (though not exclusively) amongst the students of media related courses at various Universities and Institutions. We invite you to participate in this program. We would also request you to forward this invite to others as well. Please confirm, so that we can make proper arrangements for food and refreshment.
