The inbox should get opened even when it is empty. Are you able to open other files from the memory card? I had same problem when my memory card was damaged. The problem was resolved when I replaced with a new one. Try to get it formatted using a computer. Then we can find whether the card is damaged or not. before backing up the phone memory on memory card format it once more with the tool in the phone and try.
