CHENNAI: A blind girl from Marthandam near Nagercoil, who appeared for BEd
second year examination in May 2011, was shocked to know that her result has
been withheld because one of the papers she took was actually that of MEd. The
girl, who took the help of a scribe to write the BEd psychology-2 paper, found
the exam tough, but the scribe didn't tell her it was an MEd paper. The Tamil
Nadu Teachers Education University has withheld her result and ordered a
departmental inquiry.

S Berkulin Shami was disappointed when she didn't see her name when the result
was declared on August 12. "I was told that there has been some mistake. After
much running around, I discovered what was wrong," Shami told TOI. She had
taken the exam at the Nesamoney Memorial Christian Arts College in Marthandam.

"My father met several officials in Chennai who treated us as some accused.
They even said I had copied from another student. In spite of many hurdles, I
completed my masters in English from Annamalai University in 2009-2010. Then I
enrolled for a bachelor in education (BEd) course at the All Saints College of
Education, Marthandam. At the end, this is what I got," Shami said.

Shami has a twin sister, Jakulin Shini, who is also blind. Her father Solomon
works as a police head constable in the city police commissioner's office. The
situation at home got worse after Shini's husband deserted her and their
four-year-child. "I wished my daughters would settle in their life with a
government job. I was very happy after Shami completed her BEd. We were all
eagerly waiting for her result," Solomon said.

An official at All Saints College of Education said the mix-up of the question
papers happened probably because the exam centre was an arts college where both
the exams were being held. An official at the Tamil Nadu Teachers Education
University, who did not want to be named, said, "We received the request from
Shami a couple of days ago. We have ordered a departmental inquiry. The persons
responsible for the error will have to be found out. If it was not her mistake,
the student will get some remedy soon."
