Microsoft's Windows Live offers a service called SkyDrive. It offers 25GB
of online storage free of charge. Here's how it
works.
1. Getting started
Go to SkyDrive's home page (skydrive.live.com) and, if you have an existing
Windows Live account (you will if you use Windows Live Mail, for instance),
click Sign in and enter your email address and password. If you don't have
a
Windows Live account, click the Sign up button and enter an email address,
password and the other details asked.
2. Online folders explained
By default, Windows Live SkyDrive creates four folders (as shown, below).
The
My Documents and Favoritesfolders show a padlock to denote that these are
secure
folders or as SkyDrive puts it they are 'Shared with: Just me.' The folder
titled Shared favourites is designed to store your favourite web pages or
bookmarks. Finally, the Public folder is for sharing files with your
friends
and family.
Additionally, a Free Utility Makes MS SkyDrive Even More Useful
Its called SD Explorer. SD Explorer used to be known as SkyDrive Explorer,
which probably gives you a clue as to what it is. It's a Windows utility
which provides access to your SkyDrive, just as if it were a local drive on
your PC. You can copy files to and from the drive via Windows Explorer, and
access them from any application.
You can download it at http://www.cloudstorageexplorer.com/products.php.
It runs on Windows XP and above (32- and 64-bit), and is free.
Of course, a SkyDrive isn't a local drive on your PC. It's a free 25 GB
cloud-based drive that you get free from Microsoft as part of Windows Live.
So if you already have a Hotmail account (which is also part of Windows
Live), your SkyDrive is all ready and waiting for you.
So if you already use Hotmail, or you're willing to set up an account,
SkyDrive and SD Explorer are the perfect pair. Just copy paste your key
data files to your SkyDrive on a regular basis, and that's backup sorted
once and for all. If you're worried about security, just use an encryption
product as as TrueCrypt, then back up your .TC files to your SkyDrive.

Taking back-up of the whole HD will need huge space, but since you have
mentioned documents, then sites like adrive.com, (which provide you decent
space of 50 GB for free), can be an option.
store the documents in private folders, which are inaccessible to public.
Security parameters such as storing in private folders, encrypting your
documents, password-protection, etc. will need to be looked at based on
the website's specifics. As I used it long back, so I would prefer not
commenting on the exact steps to be followed for that. However, what I
would say that this site has a good reputation according to the blogs
which I follow.
If you are open towards paying (based on the importance of the documents
to be backed-up), then surely there will be secured online solutions too
primarily intended to be used by corporates. Though for now there is
nothing striking in my mind of that sort.
Using external storage devices is a better option. And even from security
point, that satisfies oneself mentally though today there are ways to keep
the things secure in online databases. Anyways based on your current
requirements, these might be irrelevant observations.

Amar Jain.
