I think the prospective parents need not worry about the language
barrier at all. Children that age learn very very quickly and just
absorb knowledge like little sponges. also, there is enough universal
language in gesture and sound to communicate basic needs nonverbally.
I realize that a congenially blind child may have fewer gestures to
work with but at four years old, the little girl will have found ways
to communicate her needs. Many children do not start to speak much
until they are four years and older even in their native language.
one thing the parents can do and which I would recommend is that they
learn a few words and phrases in the little girl's language. This
might not be enough for deep conversations but should help basic
communication and also help break the ice and show interst in the
little girl's background and cultureand will be helpful to both sides.
May this turn out to be a blessing to both the little girl and her
people in india as well as her prospective new family in Canada.
Cheers,
Doris

Hi all,
I know someone from the U.S. who wishes to adopt a child who lives in
India and is visually impaired.
I think that the girl that they want to adopt is around 4 years old.
She currently lives in an orphanage in Bangalore.
The problem is that she can't communicate in English, as she
currently communicates with everyone in Kannada.
So, due to this, she won't be able to communicate effectively with her
family until she learns English.
Can anyone here suggest some ways in which she can convey some
important things to her parents related to food, sleep, etc until she
learns English?
Please do share your views and suggestions.
I'll convey all your suggestions to the parents who want to adopt that girl.
Cheers,
Rahul
