Dear Friends,
When I joined my current job nearly two years ago, one of the first things
that I did was to let all my colleagues know that any queries which they
might have regarding my visual impairment & mode of working (with
screenreaders) were welcome. Then I left it to them to ask whatever they
wanted to ask & whenever they felt comfortable asking it. I believe that my
openness to talk about my impairment helped in removing any hesitation in my
colleagues minds regarding talking about my impairment. Many colleagues have
informed me later that my readiness to talk about my visual impairment on
the first day created a bond between them & me.
Hope my experience mentioned above will help you in deciding about the
subject.
Regards
Mr. Sameer Latey

Subject: [AI] Talking about visual impairment
Hi all,
I have a question.
My question is this: According to you, is it advisable to talk freely
with your friends and colleagues about your visual impairment?
I mean, if you want to know someone's view on a particular subject
which is related to your visual impairment, should you go ahead and
ask that person?
For example, if you wanna know someone's views about whether a
visually impaired person should use a cane or not at a particular
place, should you ask him/her?
I also believe that many people wanna know a lot about my visual
problem, but they're hesitant to ask me directly because, I assume,
they believe that I'll be offended by such questions.
So, should I initiate a conversation about such topics?
I do realize that one should only talk about such things with people
who are close to you, and not with every other person on the street.
I also realize that one should not keep constantly talking about one's
visual impairment only, because that, too, would irritate the other
person.
So, are there any other factors that I should keep in mind while
talking about these things with my friends?
As always, your feedback would be really appreciated.
Cheers,
Rahul
