no, not the shortcuts, original files and folders have to be saved in
dropbox folder. dropbox folder is just a special folder in your computer.
there will be a subfolder called private within that folder. you have to
save all your files and folders that you want to be backed up into this
folder. if the dropbox program in your computer is active and connected to
internet, it will automatically upload and update those files into the web.

I am working on my PhD thesis. I am writing lot of material every day
and don't want to loose it in case of any system crash. Can I have an
on line back up of one of the folders on drop box so that whenever I
write a document or update an existing document in that folder,
there should be an automatic back up on the drop box without me
requiring to do that manually?
