every software including screen readers is developed under particular platform/operating system. if you say jaws, it is exclusively for windows. for non-windows operating systems there are other respective screen readers. not only jaws. there are numerous utilities. let's say MS office, for windows it is different and in order to achieve same tasks there are other office applications for different operating system. for instance, open office is there very much for both windows and linux. depends upon the software vender they are functioned under different platforms. . Most of the java applications are developed for multiple platforms. you can take example of some dictionaries which are developed for apple mackintosh and microsoft windows. now let me come to the point. if hardware manufacturer wish to develop a screen reader, that software should be developed for bios/efi. note: bios is the basic input and output system (32 bit ) and efi is the extensible firmware interface(64 bit ). in a simpler language wwe can say that both bios and efi are the primary operating system for computer hardware. these operating systemns such as windows, linux and mackintosh are the collection of softwares for providing various services to the users. . that's why there are alot of third party applications in the market since an operating system cannot provide everything. ☺ ☺ ☺!----- Original Message ----- From: "SYED IMRAN" <[email protected]>

I raise this query with a feeling  that whatever screen readers we develop
we are always at least one step behind the main stream applications, more
so, when our screen readers interact with proprietary non-windows platform
based apps. So I'd like our hardware experts out here to throw a light on
this "mystery" of computing cycle. I would like to know what is preventing
the display components in the computer to send the necessary output directly
to the speakers as they would do on the monitor screen? The point is,
somehow I do not understand the complete picture of computing cycle. I'd
like it if I can get an explanation on it in a "layman's language".

Be that as it may, as soon as you turn on your mobile / pc the output
appears on the screen while the device is booting but you will have to wait if you'd want your screen reader to announce the output. So somewhere there
is a disconnection between you and the computer.

I really appreciate the screen reader technology, but I'm also interested in the alternatives to screen readers, and would like to lend my assistance in the ways I can. Some of my wildest thoughts that are running in my mind are
how could we get the motherboard / processor vendors to make their future
generation components Braille display / speech compliant.
