To have every software as open-source could be a good thing in the
ideal world. But since Windows is still the dominant OS in the
computer world, developing a very effective open-source screen reader
for Windows would make more pragmatic sense in my view. A corporate
led process has its own benefits as well. The accessibility initiative
on the part of Apple has made their high-quality products pretty much
accessible to the visually challenged. Besides, the model has prompted
others mainly Android to adopt. Most of the accessibility features are
more or less on the broad lines set by apple. But as Android is
open-source, the accessibility of their products is more meaningful
for us in a sense, as Android is a great deal more customizable, and
the set of choice much larger for us. So both corporate and
open-source development should go hand in hand. When I first tried
NVDA in 2010, I really didn't find it very exciting, but its evolution
since then has been heartening. Don't think it has reached a level at
least for me where it could become my primary screen reader, but the
way it is continuing to evolve, I am sure it can certainly give Jaws a
run for its money pretty soon. That might in fact prompt Freedom
Scientific to perhaps take a relook at their pricing, as well as the
pace of their development and evolution.
