Dear friends, this mail is to share with you a news that I have
recently read in a local journel called 'thozhil vartha' (a Malayalam
journel) regarding the ruthless attitude by Public Service Commission
(Kerala), and the interview board constituted by the same, towards a
visually impaired person in an interview. It seems, while the
concerned person was attending the interview for the post of Upper
Primary School Assistant (UPSA), the interview board had given him a
news paper, and asked him to read from it. When the person replied
that he can read, and write only using Braille script, he was labeled
as illiterate, as he can't read the newspaper without seeking other's
help. The board also commented that the person cannot move
independently as he is ninety percent visually impaired. On the same
grounds, he was marked as not eligible to uphold the position of UPSA.
As he could not attain the job, even having good academic records, now
he is surviving on selling lottery tickets at certain places. I feel
that these organizations should take up the issue, and should help the
person to fight for the justice. The shocking part of the news was
that, this particular post was reserved for the visually impaired
person. I strongly believe that the interview board should be
unanimously suspented, and other legal actions should be taken agains
the authorities. It is insulting to consider a visually impaired
person as illiterate, as he cannot read some 'other' script. I
strongly feel that, if we can't support this person in materializing
his needs, then there is no point in having any kind of discussions
regarding discriminations among ourselves.
thanks

Time to meet up again!
