Because banks do not work in a vacuum, they are part and parcel of a society and as such, have responsibilities to the society. The disabled are dignified members of this society and for full participation of the disabled in the social realm, reasonable accommodation has to be made. That is the ideal answer. To go further down the more pragmatic route, the answer also has to deal with the fact that the country that is India ratified the UNCRPD in 2007 and the convention does provide for reasonable accommodation. As such the government has a responsibility in this regard. If we are worried about the cost implications so much, why should there be talk of accessibility and inclusion at all? Because of the nature of demography of the disabled and the nature of technological development, more often than not, bringing about greater accessibility, particularly to existing structures, involves additional cost. Why should anyone bother?
