But, is there some other hack that anyone knows of?" I had set Basic HTML as my default view some time ago via the same method. Just to verify that this method still works, I switched to Standard View and then back to Basic HTML view. There was certainly a link 'Set Basic HTML As Default View'. If you can't find it via the Links List dialog try down arrowing after a Ctrl Home, because the link is somewhere on the top of the page.
