Vibrating 'SmartCane' device helps blind people avoid obstacles

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi create the
'SmartCane' device to help visually impaired people detect obstacles
above-the-knee and from a distance. Helena Williams reports.

Summary Blind since birth, bank worker Rahul Gambhir finds navigating
the streets of New Delhi a daily challenge. (SOUNDBITE) VISUALLY
IMPAIRED VOLUNTEER RAHUL GAMBHIR, SAYING: "It has added to the comfort
level, it has added to the confidence level, it has like added to my
experience of walking on the road, commuting to my work place, to my
home, travelling to shopping malls and all. I feel empowered while
using it."
