Dear Arti,

I've been using the Smartcane device since more than an year now and I must say that this is a grate addon to the White cane which enables us to know the raised obstacles which are otherwise not detectable with the regular cane in advance and negociate them without collision. Eversince I started using this device, there has been a significant change in my walking behaviour and unwanted contacts with strangers, dangerous objects like tree branches, high garbage dustbins on Delhi roads, banner posts, etc. have been reduced to minimum which has resulted in higher dignity and improved confidence while walking. The device has been tested and aproved by hundreds of visually impaired users at various organisations in different environments and situations and has received overwhelming response from all across the country. Counting on the huge positive response and recognising the need for safe and independent mobility, the Government of India has decided to include the device in the list of gadgets given under its flagship ADIP scheme for PwDs. The device can also be purchased directly at a cost of RS. 3000 from Saksham Trust New Delhi and its partner organisations in different states. To maximize the outreach, the Assistech group behind this inovation have also started their own fund raising campaign. This allows them to provide the device to the needy visually challenged persons at a subsidized price of Rs. 400. The remaining amount of Rs. 2600 is raised through donors. Any person with valid disability (visual impairment) certificate and a monthly income of less than Rs. 20,000/ month from all sources is eligible for availing the benefit under this scheme. However, at present limited number of donations are available and part of them are exclusively for women. Students and young professionals (especially women) will be given preference. To know more about this and for registration, please contact Saksham helpline number: 01164650655 and provide the following information: Name, contact number, email, age, current income and disability certificate.
