Currently, 5.04 lakh teacher vacancies persist in India's 14 lakh elementary schools mainly due to unavailability of trained teachers. This year, 4,70,032 candidates took the CBSE National TET Exam for qualifying to teach Classes VI to VIII. Only 43,034 qualified. General section candidates had a pass percentage of 13.8 in this paper; SCs had 3.88; STs had 4.86 and OBCs had 8.23. Average pass percentage was just 9.16.
