A few weeks ago I attended a Conference for
Technical Analysts. I met Ashish Goyal at this conference.
Ashish is currently working as a Hedge Fund
Manager at Blue Crest Capital. He has a masters
in management from NMIMS in Mumbai. He joined
the treasury department of ING Vysya Bank in
Bangalore after graduation, and worked as a
fixed income trader there for three years.
After a successful stint at the bank he decided
to go to the USA for higher studies. He ended up
at the Wharton Business School where he won the
Joseph P Wharton award, given annually to a
student who symbolizes "Wharton's way of life".
Ashish joined JP Morgan as a fixed income
trader. He worked there for four years before
joining Blue Crest Capital in London.

that story. But here's why I was captivated by Ashish, and you will be too.
When Ashish was 9 years old he was diagnosed
with retinitis pigmentosa. Since then, he had
been steadily losing his vision, until at the
age of 22, he was completely blind.

Award for the Empowerment of Persons with
Disabilities in 2010 from the President of India.

I was listening to Ashish at this conference
with about 200 other people. I am quite sure
that everyone present in that room must have had
goose bumps while Ashish was sharing his story
and experiences. The standing ovation that he
accepted humbly after his speech was proof that
he had touched everyone's heart in one way or
other. I felt very inspired listening to him and
knew I had to share his story with you.

updating himself and learning despite his
disability. Ashish considers himself fortunate
to be born in the 80's. He never used Braille
language to study. He always relied on a screen
reading software which reads out all the words
to him. He has been using this software since he
was a child till today. He uses it to read (or
listen to, actually) books, check emails, read research reports etc.
He listens to the market to navigate the
challenging macro-economic environment. He gave
us a glimpse of his software. He played out
sections from a news article through his software.
But here is the really extraordinary thing. When
he played his reading software out to us he did
so at various speeds. First was the speed at

Don't worry if you couldn't make out anything

times faster than what we can hear and
understand. This is what I would call as
super-normal speed. Over time Ashish has
developed an ability to listen at such high speeds.

Ashish not only gave us a glimpse of his daily
life but also shared his philosophy of life. And
how this helped him as a trader. One thing which
he truly believes in is finding solutions to
problems. Everyone has some or other problems in
life. But who is going to find a solution?
Instead of cribbing, cringing and worrying about
the problem his focus was always on the
solution. I think this is one aspect that has
brought him so far ahead in life, not only as a person, but also as a trader.

Ashish humbly gives all the credit to technology
and spirituality in his pursuit of managing
money in a very professional manner. But to me
he stands as an excellent example of human
determination and perseverance. If you have the
right attitude nothing can stop you from
