I don't understand how a serious www-by-email-only-user can live without the statistics. I find it very convenient to receive them automatically in the ACCMAIL digest every day. The statistics show me which servers will be the best for me on that particular day. I always choose one from the "Less than 1 hour" list. And when, for instance, <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> is not in the list - like during the past days - I know it's very probably off-line and I won't waste my time with it. Then I'll swiftly move to another server :-) Best regards, Frits Westra -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] Net-Tamer V 1.11.2 - Registered ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Jan 1999 23:48:57 +0100 From: Michel Anneessens <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: HotMail POPper >Date: Fri, 8 Jan 1999 16:03:24 +0530 >From: "Sriram N. That was when I saw some Arabic alphabet in the "original message" part the letter by Mr. Abdurrahman Q. Al-Qahtani. In fact, the date of the message was stated in Arabic. My question is did anybody else see the date in Arabic alphabet or did they see some funny-looking non-sensical signs of all kinds? Is it possible to communicate e-mails in other alphabet? And how? I am glad to do some help on this topic. I have studied POP3 service for a long time because of my expensive ISP charge. Usa.net's POp3 server is "pop.netaddress.usa.net". Mailcity.com's is a very good 4Mb-offered free mail server, but unfortunately it doesn't have POP3 service by now. Hotmail.com's is "pop.hotmail.com" but it charges US$18.00 per 1 year for POP3 server for a non-u.s. resident. If some of you are interested in Chinese POP3 servers, mail me privately. I could list you a lot. Mr(s). Gerry Boyd is right. To guess and to try is a cheap way to know the pop3 servers. Another may be expansive. If you have webpage access, you could click the "help" button and find it in the related topic. POP3 is used to receive e-mails. How about sending out e-mails? You need to set up SMTP server. First, it is better to set it as your ISP SMTP server. If you haven't one or your ISP SMTP server is wrong by accident when you really need it immediately, you could set any known SMTP server as your current SMTP server. It just like you could use the mailbox miles away from your home if the mailbox nearby you is damaged. And also thank those that are going to send and/or post. In these three days, I got two solutions to my question. One is to set "pop.hotmail.com" as my POP3 server. It works and take me back an e-mail from hotmail staff. According to its saying, I visit the http://www.hotmail.com/hts-ps.html and find out the hotmail intends to charge every POP3 user US$18.00 per one year service for non-U.S. residents. So if you don't mind the fee, hotmail users can try the above link location to get POP3 service. (I mind indeed :) ) The other is to download the cwebmail utility from www.cwebmail.com. I don't try this yet. My "THe Bat!" works just fine. For my poor PC reason, I don't want to install a program which is only for a free e-mail account. So I want to give up the hotmail account. However, thank all of you again for your attentions and helpful directions. Your letters make me feel like in a large harmonious family. I wish that I could also do my best to help the other guys in this list sometime in the future just as you help me. P.S. If I were permitted to introduce some excellent free-mails. I'd like to say usa.net is and 990.net is if you are a Chinese. They all offer you free POP3 service which could save your time and then money enough. And usa.net supplies 5Mb space for one user that is the biggest I have found. Binary files, such as word processor documents, graphical images, and executeable files, cannot be sent directly via E-mail. Uuencode is a method which translates a binary file into a coded text format which is suitable for sending via E-mail. The basic scheme is to break groups of 3 eight bit characters (24 bits) into 4 six bit characters and then add 32 (a space) to each six bit character which maps it into a readily transmittable character. Another way of phrasing this is to say that the encoded 6 bit characters are mapped into the 64 character set: `!"#$%&'()*+,-./012356789:;<=>[email protected][\]^_ for transmission via E-mail. Most lines in an encoded file have 45 encoded characters. When you look at a UU-encoded file note that most lines start with the letter "M". "M" is decimal 77 which, minus the 32 (blank) bias, is 45. The 45 encoded characters take 60 bytes because of the of the grouping ratio of 4 bytes to 3 bytes. This plus the "M" makes each line in the file 61 characters long. So a typical uuencoded file will look something like: [begin 700 picture.jpg] M`=\`!RI]@3,``)6H```#KP!($`(!"P`!``!!2```&10``!/X```69````@`` M```````7.``$``(`!``$``.`!0`"``,Q3``````````````````````````` M```N.&%D````````````````````%````.P````````````````````(+G1E M.'0```````(````"````04@```(```!U^@`````"(```````("YP860````` M``````````````"X``!#2`````````````````````@N9&%T80`````````` M9G)A;64`86)O=71?=&5X=`!N97AT;V)J96-T`&YE=V=A;65?8G0`.V-O.F5? M:71E;0!L979E;%]I=&5M`')O=W-?:71E;0!G86UE7V]V97(`=&5T.FES7VEC M;VX`96YD7V]F7V=A;64`.V-O.F5?.&]S:71I;VX`.')O9W)A;6YA;64`.F5S 0.'=U:60`+F=E='!W=6ED`')C ` end As some transmission mechanisms compress or remove spaces, spaces are changed into back-quote (~) characters (ASCII 96). The file always starts with a "begin" followed by the Octal equivalent of the Unix file permissions followed by the real name of the file. The last line is always the word "end" which may optionally be followed by some size information depending on the uuencoding program used. >From a theoretical view, this encoding is encoding 24 bits modulo 64. Note that 64**3 is = 2**24. The result is 24 bits in and 32 bits out, a 33% size increase. -- Gerry Boyd -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jan 1999 00:07:53 +0200 From: Dan Platon <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Stats should be taken off the list? =NO Hi, [EMAIL PROTECTED] was my favourite, when I received the notice (probably in september last year) I feel that I was left in the middle of nowhere. Your emailer (M$ Outlook Express) only sees a UUE header in the first part, and so doesn't consider the other three parts to be an encoded file, just text. All four messages are parts to the same file. What you will have to do is sort the four mails so that they are in order, and then save them all into one single file on disk and decode them. I don't know how to do this in M$(w)OE, so someone else will have to give you guidance on how to do this. :-( Brian Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] ICQ# 19879213 http://www.pcisys.net/~blj8 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Jan 1999 11:33:47 -0800 From: "Gerald E.
