Do I need any softwares for this? Are there any free > softwares? A simple autoresponder that whenever you pull messages from your POP3 account, identifies which of them are meant for being autoresponded and autoresponds to them is offered by many e-mail programs (I have this option on my Pegasus e-mail software. I think that some of the other software also allows it. If you wish to do it, check for the filtering options. On Pegasus Mail (http://www.pmail.com) you just set a filter with instructions that if several conditions are met, responds to the poster of the message. There are a few things that one should know before setting an autoresponder. You want to prevent loops, and you want to give instructions for people who use your autoresponder incorrectly. The second may look trivial at first, but it is not. The first doesn't look trivial, and indeed it isn't. Let's say that you want to set a simple autoresponder so that whenever one wants to get your recent article, one has to post a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject "get article.txt", and when you download your pop3 messages your e-mail software will automatically respond to such a message. Nice, but if this option become popular, people will assume that your autoresponder has other things to offer, and will try to post "help", "info", "get index", to your e-mail address. Further more, all combinations of capital letters with small letters, "send" instead of "get", message in the body instead of the subject and so on, will appear and all of them will find their way to your mailbox. You may decide to use a forwarding service as your autoresponding address so that it would be clear that what is posted to the one address is for your autoresponder, and posts that are addressed directly to your address are meant for you. In such a case you may decide to autorespond with a help file whenever some message was posted to the autoresponder's address but the format of the comand was not recognized. This is excellent and works well, but then you should pay attention to prevent loops. You don't want that a bounced back message will generate a help file which will generate a bounced back message etc. forever. There are a few things to take care, when developing an autoresponder, not all of them you are able to follow from many pop3 servers: 1) your autoresponder should have a null return-path 2) your autoresponder should ignore messages which have a null return path 3) your autoresponder should add the following header fields to its messages: a) Auto-Submitted: auto-replied b) X-Loop: _autoresponder's_address_ 4) also recommended (but not necessary) to add the following fields: a) Delivered-To: _autoresponder's_address_ b) Precedence: bulk 5) Your autoresponder should not autorespond to messages that contain: a) "X-Loop:" header field. b) the "Auto-Submitted" header field, unless it is "auto-submitted: no". 6) You may also set it to ignore messages that contain words which might suggest that it is not a request. e.g. if a message contain the word "error", your autoresponder should not respond to the message. Comments: * The setting of the return path might be a problem because many ISPs do not allow the user to set it, but set it by themselves. * If you assume that the trafic into your autoresponder will be very small, you may decide that whenever a message which does not match exactly the format will find its way to your mailbox (instead of being autoresponded with a help file), this will add some burden to you, but will drastically reduce the risk of producing loops. * The return path is usually found in incoming messages in the "Return-Path:" header field. You may check if it is produced for incoming messages (the return path, is in fact part of thje SMTP commands and not part of the message header, but the convention is that when the message leaves the SMTP environment, the last server takes the "From " address from the SMTP envelope (Notice the that is not the "From:" header field), and put it in the header, with the "Return-Path:" header field. In principle, bounced messages should use the return path, and not the address in the "From:" or "Reply-To:" field, but unfortunately, many mail servers do not comply with Internet standards, and thus known to cause problems. Another problem I'm dealing with now is the following: I'm dutch, and while mailing I get a lot of German and French mail. Of course English too, but this isn't giving me problems because Dutch and English character set is equal. This is different with French and German characters cause they contain special characters with umlauts and accents. Getting French and German documents leave me with incomplete words where accented and characters with umlaut are substituted by non alphabetic characters. My knowledge of French and German allows me to understand the text anyway, but, for cosmetical reasons it would be very nice if I could receive or change these 'incomplete' texts WITH the original French and German characters. Is this possible? Can I do this while receiving, or is there a way to convert these texts after receiving? For the sake of completeness: I'am a Macintosh-user and I have my keyboard set to USA-English character set. I am trying to get the link as description below, but I am fail: "... www4mail will reply with the requested Web document as an e-mail attachment which you can visualize with any standard Web browser like Netscape, Internet explorer, Lynx, etc. Therein, the original page layout (tables, colours, etc) will be preserved. You can obtain interest messages by selecting the respective buttons and clicking the `Get Selected Document(s)' button at the footer of the Web page to make a new, single e-mail request to www4mail...". " XBYJS (use one option line only!) Some Web browsers are not capable of transmitting data by e-mail, e.g., MS-IE v3.0. This problem usually shows up after you check the links that you would like to retrieve and select the "Get Selected Document(s)" button. What you get is that your mail program opens a new message with the address of the www4mail server appearing and the body of the message blank. You can use the XBYJS option to work-around this problem provided you are using a JavaScript compatible browser. Note: This work-around tries to fill in the Subject: line automatically instead of the message body needed by www4mail. But if you notice that the Subject: line is blank, you will need to cut out all characters starting from the ? sign in the To: field and paste them in the Subject: line manually." When I am following the above guide, MS Exchange opens. How can Lotus Notes open instead? I am joining with ACCMail list with the same question 20 days ago, but no reply. Thanks in advance. (I.e, he deserves the credit for this idea and the bulk of its implementation, not me). I deduce that getweb doesn't support this, maybe becuase it is "expensive" -- agora has to get the original page to compare it with what you sent back. > > By "[link]" are you referring to [] with a number inside, or "[LINK]" > literally? I have seen the letter, and do not know how to use it, but I think [link] (literally) refers to a poor choice of alt tag in an image. Lynx often throws this up. But I am not sure. > for the former, you need to find the referenced number near the bottom of > the message, and ask for that URL. Messy. With agora you can just request them by number, provided the original URL is preserved in the Subject: line. That is to say you can just reply and have a message body of 3 13 26 I don't know if getweb supports this model either. Boyd" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: NEWS: MP3 search engine Accmailers Excerpt from Scout Report February 5, 1999 Volume 5, Number 39 17. Fast MP3 Search http://mp3.lycos.com/ MP3, a file format that offers near-CD quality sound in very small file sizes, is one of the most popular computerized audio technologies ever. However, the widespread bootlegging of copyrighted music has also made it rather controversial, especially where the recording industry is concerned. After discovering that MP3 was one of the most requested terms on its search engines, Lycos decided to create a search engine just for MP3. Fast MP3 Search currently contains over 500,000 files, searchable by artist or song name. To assist users, an MP3 Server Reliability Guide ranks the more than 1000 FTP servers accessed on a five star system, five being the most reliable. Additional resources at the site include ranked links to MP3 players and encoders and a guide to getting started. Search returns do not distinguish between pirated and legally provided songs, but Lycos has agreed to work with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to combat copyright infringement. I'll guess the rules are the same for Win 95 as they are for Win 98. Click My Computer Click View then Folder Options... Click File Types Tab Scroll through the list for the file type that is assocated with IE and delete it Add new type that is associated with Lotus Notes Example: You scroll through the list and find that IE is associated with .htm, .html, .xbm, .shtml files. This means that IE opens every time you click on an HTML type document link. In my case I wanted it to be Netscape. So I deleted IE and added Netscape Hypertext Document. Opens with Netscape, Extension: HTL HTML SHTML XBM, and Content Mime: text/html Being as I only have used Windoze98 since 14Dec98, this might not be the same for Win 95. You can also edit the registry. The technical document for this is from Netscape and covers Win 95, Netscape 4.05 and IE 4.0 http://help.netscape.com/kb/client/980502-2.html Most of the entries are the same under Win 98 and Netscape 4.50 -- Gerry Boyd -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Feb 1999 12:35:32 GMT-6 From: Francisco Novo Mesegue <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Not a recognized Internet host !!!
