There are many agents (yes, free!) which "scour the internet" to catalog information for you, but I have not heard them called "fetch services"! Some options - * Subscribe to mailing lists which discuss your topics of interest. * Read newsgroups which discuss these topics * Register with a search engine watcher such as Tracerlock to keep track of new websites on your topic and email you with fresh results. * Register with a service like NetMind which will email you whenever there are changes to relevant portions of web pages discussing your topic * Check out some of the 'bots' listed on botspot.com, which specialise in feeding users with focussed information on particular topics. Visit "Micks Open Public News Servers at "http://web.ukonline.co.uk/micks2/new/news/news.htm". It was just updated for March 1999. In the current release he lists 46 open newsservers. <snip from top of Nicks page> 2 Servers added 28 Confirmed as working 15 Failed 1 Restored 6 Servers Removed Thanks for all the E-mail regarding the servers I have added the Count and Post details to all working servers. If you are using Netscape you may find you are able to post to some of the groups marked no posting If a server is not found or down it means it was not working on the day I checked it. This does not mean it has gone permanently. If I find it does not work on 3 separate occasions it will be removed (*Indicates failed twice) This page contains a large table and may take a little time to down load <Snip> The table consists of the site status, Site address, if it carries Binaries, carriers 2600/warez, number of groups / posting allowed, and then it has first added. The most recent Open newssever was added March 7, 1999. It is at "news://207.227.203.4" Carries both Binaries, and 2600/warez. The most astounding part is it carries 45,200 Groups and does allow posting. If the Newsserver you are using dies just revisit Micks site and pick out a new live one. 45,200 Groups is enough for anyone. Enjoy... ========================= >Date: Thu, 4 Mar 1999 22:53:54 -0800 >From: iron <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: Public News Groups- help > >Hi everyone out there. >i would like to know if there are public/private news servers which i >can >have access to. >my news server gives pratically nothin. >thanx >z. >[EMAIL PROTECTED] > ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Mar 1999 18:25:00 +0000 From: Steve Harris <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This service appears to be down due to misconfiguration. I read in a back issue of ACCMAIL (ACCMAIL Digest - 25 Feb 1999 to 26 Feb 1999 (#1999-58)) about the happy99.exe worm - a sort of virus that gets transmitted by email. I recently came across a site which has more information on this and how to get rid of it. Those interested should go to: http://www.3inet.com/ Since we all use email I thought this would be a useful information to pass on. When you say to use a browser and do a search, that really isn't an answer. You should tell the user how to do this search by E-mail methods... -- Gerry Boyd -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Mar 1999 10:02:11 +0500 From: Aziz Sabirov <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: problem with www4mail Hello accmailers, The idea of www4mail service is great but i experience problems with it. Recently I sent request for http://www.lycos.com and :-) received this page in Italian. I use dictionary sometimes reading English pages. Should i look forward to buy Italian big one? I was disappointed. I thought that default language is English ?! I've sent this request again and got the same result. Sending request with language option in it as: XLANGUAGE EN http://www.lycos.com/ or XLANGUAGE EN http://www.lycos.com/ give me Italian version as well. Also, I experienced problems getting files. I requested some text files with sizes in the range 30- 400 kb but never got them. Is there any tips and secret techniks to follow when using www4mail ? My system is WinNT. Mail&Internet programz: Outlook98, InternetExplorer4.0 I wouldn't post this boring complaint to the list if www4mail service support team helped me. They don't seem to like answering questions. Or I want too much from free service :-) Thanks Aziz. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Feb 1999 14:41:58 +0800 From: eagle <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: help hi all, who can tell me what the 'mirror site' is in detail? i am grateful. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Mar 1999 20:41:30 -0800 From: "Gerald E. An archive site or web site which keeps a copy of some or all files at another site so as to make them more quickly available to local users and to reduce the load on the source site. For instance, the Simtel archives are "mirrored" all around the world. No need to get a file from the US site because a local site is probably located in your country. -- Gerry Boyd -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Mar 1999 20:48:51 -0800 From: "Gerald E.
