Several people have sent me queries about setting up
Majordomo at Crosswinds.
So here are some notes on the Crosswinds installaton, which
will answer those questions.
Crosswinds don't provide their own documentation so you must
rely on what you can find elsewhere, plus your own
experimentation.
System administrators can, and do, configure Majordomo in
different ways. Local idiosyncrasies are common.
One of the great advantages of Majordomo is that list owners
can manage their lists entirely by email. There are three
files that you can email to the Majordomo server -
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
* the CONFIG file
* the INFO file
* the INTRO file
The CONFIG file is the one that is really important. The
other two contain information for subscribers.
The CONFIG file tells Majordomo how you want the list to
function. I have appended an example CONFIG at the foot of
this email.
The INFO file is a short description of the list and its
objectives. The INTRO file is more detailed - it sets out
the ground rules for the operation of the list, and would
commonly include a FAQ.
For examples, get the INFO and INTRO files of an active
list, eg: send emails to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with
"info stone" and "intro stone" as the message body.
In these spam-infested days, you have to moderate your list
if you want to keep your subscribers. Majordomo bounces all
postings to the moderator - that means you get a copy of the
entire email, including all the headers.
Edit the email like this -
* Remove all headers, except "From", "To", "Date" and
"Subject".
* On the first line, insert "Approved: <password>", with no
blank lines following.
* It should look like this
Approved: <password>
To: <list-name>
From: <subscriber email address>
Date: <whenever>
Subject: <subscriber's subject>
<blank line here>
<subscriber's message>
* At this point you can remove any garbage such as HTML,
address cards, etc
* Forward the edited email to the list, not to Majordomo.
Some things you cannot do with Crosswinds Majordomo -
* Remove the list
* Change list owner
* Invoke list digests
Test your list thoroughly before you invite subscriptions.
Try to anticipate all the things that might happen and all
the things that might go wrong.
Crosswinds offer this service for free, so it would be very
undiplomatic to hassle them until you have exhausted every
other option, including exernal documentation. If you are
really stuck, and you really cannot find a kludge or
workaround, contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Below the dotted line is an example of a CONFIG file as you
would email it to the Majordomo server. This list has open
subscription and is moderated. Substitute your list-name and
list-password throughout.

If your question has something to do with www-search engines
like Altavista, Hotbot, etc, or in general fill-out-forms on WWW sites,
be sure to read "Accessing the Internet via email - User guide to WWW
search engines" by Gerald E. Boyd.
This faq covers the access to all major search-engines, there is a
document with all available help-files (wshelp.faq) and also a document
that how to "crack" such a form yourself (wscrack.faq).
Send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] and in the body of the message
use the following:
send ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/gb/gboyd/wsintro.faq
send ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/gb/gboyd/wshelp.faq
send ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/gb/gboyd/wscrack.faq

If you desire all the files in one zip file, then download the file
titled wssearch.zip

Bob Appleton lives in Germany and not in the states, and should be back
next week, but I guess, that after he comes back, it will take him a while
to update his files. They are supposed to be updated on April.

I believe this occurs because the site does a reverse IP lookup and
redirects to the page in the appropriate language.
Perhaps this can be checked by accessing the site through a German or French
proxy server.

Hi everyone,
I've seen that some questions keep repeating, probably coming from new subscribers. I
suggest that every new subscriber should receive, alltogether with his subscription
confirmation or welcome message, the ACCMAIL FAQ.
Thus, he will already have a lot of answers, and he might save a lot of Gerry's time.
All the best,

No it wouldn't. There are a number of limits on the server
to stop it getting overloaded. First is quota, decided by
domain. Second is the number of live users at any one time.
This limits the size of the quota file and by limiting the
number of possible users it reduces the load on the server.
Steve Harris's program probes the server with a new address
each day. These would then persist for 42 days, meaing 42
users would be locked out from using agora.
W3C's Agora, the original, had to be shut down because it
got overloaded with requests. I have put the limits into
Agora and gone to some efforts to lighten its load on the
surrounding network to try to prevent this happening to
those running servers. If people want Agoras with less limits
they should get people more local to them to run the software.
It only needs Unix. Perl, and the Cern Line-mode browser.
That is half the point of limiting access by domain, to encourage
people to set them up in many places. If you are in the
.uk domain your quota is not 14, but 42 on my server, for example.
When was the last time someone posted to this list saying that
they have persuaded someone to run existing WWW-to-mail code
on their machine, thus making a new server live?
