Here it is. It was rather a rush job, since I wanted to finish it asap,
and I translated rather loosely in parts (I hope I haven't overlooked any
embarrassing typos....). I'd be interested to know whether anyone has had
good results with them.

5. Suggestions and Comments
1. What does Downloadslave do ?
Via Downloadslave, you can download any files from the internet in a
convenient and above all cost effective way. The HTTP and FTP protocols
are supported.
When you send us a request, our server will download the files desired and
send them to you by email.
Most of you have a very fast connection to your provider's mail server, so
that you can use the bandwidth of your connection in a considerably more
effective way.
The advantages for you:
After sending off your request you can immediately go offline and save
valuable (expensive) online time.
No need to get annoyed about aborted connects and poor download rates. If
there are errors, we make several attempts to obtain the file for you and
as far as possible only send error-free files to your mailbox.
You can first collect interesting links and then order the files in one
go.
You receive a confirmation of each request by email with a status report
on any errors.
2. What do I need to do in order to use Downloadslave ?
There are two ways to use our service:
a) by email
b) with the programme "Urlrequester", which can be downloaded free from
our homepage
In both cases, you must first obtain a password. This is done by simply
sending a blank mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You will promptly receive
a personal password and can then use the service.
a) Just send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the URL of the you
wish to retrieve in the body. The subject line can be left blank.
For example, if you want to retrieve our programme Urlrequester by email,
the body of the email should look like this:
PASS:YOURPASSWD
http://www.downloadslave.com/UrlRequester.zip
FTP addresses are also no problem. Several URLs can be ordered per email.
The maximum number of URLs per request is published in the Web.
b) It is considerably simpler to use our service with the programme
mentioned above. After the download it needs only to be unpacked and
started. Before using it for the first time, your email address and
password have to be entered in the [PROPERTIES] menu.
After you have made these settings you can drag and drop any link from
your browser into the Urlrequester window. Once you have all your links
together you can click on [SENDREQUEST].
That's all! The files you want will be sent to you by email.
The programme has a 'stay on top shell' and is thus always visible in the
foreground.
3. How long will I have to wait for the files?
We will send you a mail confirming the request as soon as we receive it.
How long we need for the download depends of course to a large extent on
the size and number of the files requested, so that the time ranges from a
few minutes to several hours. However, you can find out the download
status of your request via our web page. You will probably not need all
the files immediately, so it often suffices if you receive the files
during your next online session the next day. But then with "FULL SPEED".
4 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
[Translator's note: The first question (and the answer) is only relevant
for people in Germany who have an account with German Telekom. I have
therefore left it out.]
Q: I have the Urlrequester 2.0X. When I try to send off a request, nothing
seems to get through.
A: Since version 2, requests are sent direct to downloadslave. Emails are
no longer sent (except when a password is ordered). Urlrequester needs
access via ports 1500 and 1504 in order to function. So if you should be
"sitting" behind a "firewall" (or proxy), then check whether these ports
are also being let through.
Q: I sent a request mail to downloadslave but did not receive any reply.
A: Please make sure that all request mails are sent to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Also make sure that your password is given in the
body of the message in the form:
PASS:YOURPASSWD
The best thing is to use our programme UrlRequester. If you do so, it is
very important that you enter you email address and password correctly.
Q: It works fine when I order small files, but when I order a larger file
I get either an error message or nothing at all.
A: With many online services (e.g. T-Online, AOL, Compuserve, gmx.net
etc), your mailbox may be limited to a certain size. A number of providers
also limit the size of an individual mail. We cannot send you the mail if
these limits are exceeded. Please only order files which are not too large
for your mailbox, in order to avoid unnecessary traffic.
Q: I would like to download a number of files. When is it useful to order
several files in one request?
A: The ability to order several URLs in one mail is useful if you want to
receive all the files in one reply mail (e.g. because the files are
connected to each other in some way). The reply mail will not be sent to
you until all files have been processed. It is therefore better to send
several requests for files that are not connected in any way. If the files
are relatively large (<500 Kb), then they should certainly be ordered
individually (i.e. one mail per file).
Q: What is the maximum size of a file that I can get via downloadslave?
A: Please refer to our homepage for the current maximum size
Q: I have used downloadslave successfully a few times, but now I no longer
get any response to my requests.
A: Downloadslave automatically blocks users if it detects problems in
sending mails. However, you can unblock your account yourself via
Downloadstatus [translator's note: I have no idea what this means]. Make
sure that you only order files that do not exceed your mailbox's limits.
Deactivate your autoresponder if you have one. Always write new mails for
new requests (please do not send a request by replying directly to a mail
from downloadslave, since this would be interpreted as an error in sending
a mail).
Q: I requested a relatively long URL, but downloadslave did not recognise
it correctly. It was cut of in the middle. How can I avoid this problem?
A: The surest way to request URLs is to use Urlrequester, since this
problem does not arise when you use the programme. Should you not want to
use this programme, please make sure that the automatic line wrap is set
to a sufficiently high value in your mailer software (e.g. 255). The
situation can also be remedied by changing the setting from HTML to text.
5. Suggestions and Comments.

negative comments, you can send them to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

1989 No. 9 (Utilities)
Purpose: Spreads a DOS file too large to be copied onto a single floppy disk
across multiple diskettes, enabling the file to be restored onto a second
machine.
Format: SLICE [d:][path]filename[.ext] d:
Remarks: The filename of the file to be divided may be preceded with a drive
and/or path, if needed. The d:20target drive may be any drive that DOS
recognizes as a removable medium. Diskettes from 160KB to 1.44MB capacity may
be used, as may disk cartridges whose device driver identifies them as
employing a removable medium.
As each target diskette becomes filled, the user is prompted to insert a fresh
one; up to 99 formatted target disks may be accommodated. On the first of
these, SLICE also creates a short (approximately 1KB) program, SPLICE.COM,
which is subsequently used to reassemble the separate sections into which
filename has been broken.

I think that the program that you may be looking for is called Slice.
When you use it, you can split up a file over several disks and it puts a
copy of Splice on the first disk. Splice rejoins everything. I have a
copy of it somewhere around here, but it might be on a 5 1/4" disk. I
think it was shareware, so I would think that it would be available
somewhere on the net.
Hope this helps,
Matt

Really not? What about setting up a cron job or a simple batch file
that sends out a request to a www4mail server each day? (Of course I
would not recommend it due to the traffic it would cause - is there
really any Web page that is that important to be visited /every/

I do not think this is possible. Judging from the "help" (not that it
is of much help) file I would say that Downloadslave sends requested
files always as an attachment. It does not seem to have a "split"
option, but I have ordered the Web page, too, just to be sure.

[German text]
I have translated it the best I could. Note that the original text
is not written in particularly good German, so if the translation
reads a bit clumsy it is partly because of that and partly because
of me not being a professional. In some cases I have thrown a few
additional words in for a better understanding.
It would be best if some native speaker could adapt the text to
contemporary English, however.
An expression I could neither find in my dictionary nor remember is
the translation of the German verb "freischalten". It means to clear
something blocked (a special service, in this case) by the flick of
a switch. Could anyone tell me the english equivalent, please?
You may want to know that Internet access via an ISP is a lot more
expensive in Germany than in the USA, for instance, where it is
relatively cheap. - The translated text follows:

5. Suggestions
1. What does the Downloadslave do?
Via the Downloadslave you can download any file from the Internet
very easily and cost-saving above all. The HTTP and FTP protocols
are supported. If you send us a request, our server will download
the desired files and return them to you via e-mail.
The connection to the Mail-Server of your provider is much faster
in most cases, so you will make a considerably better use of the
bandwidth of your connection.
Your advantages are:
- You may go offline immediately after sending your request and save
valuable (expensive) online time this way.
- You will not have to worry about lost connections and bad download
rates any longer. In case of errors we will try to get the file for
you repeatedly and we will put only faultless files into your inbox
if possible.
- You may collect interesting links first and request them altogether
later.
- You will receive an acknowledgement message via e-mail which
contains status informations and possibly error details.
2. What must I do to use the Downloadslave?
There are two ways to use our service:
a) via e-mail
b) via the program UrlRequester, which can be downloaded from our
homepage for free.
In both cases you will have to request a password first. You can
achieve this by sending an empty mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Your personal password will be returned to you immediately. When
you have received the password, the service is open and accessible
for you.
a)
Simply send an e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] that contains the
address (URL) of the desired file as text. You may leave the subject
line blank. If you want to request our program UrlRequester via
e-mail for example, the body of the mail should look as follows:
PASS:YOURPASSWD
http://www.downloadslave.com/UrlRequester.zip
You can give FTP adresses without any problem. Several URLs per
message are possible, the maximum number per request is published
on the Web page.
b)
You can make considerably easier use of our service with the above
mentioned program. After its download you only need to extract and
run it. Before the FIRST start you only MUST enter your own e-mail
address as well as your password under the point [PROPERTIES].
After configuring these settings you can drag any LINK from your Web
browser and drop it into the UrlRequester window. When you have all
links together, press the button [SENDREQUEST]. That's it!
You will receive the desired files via e-mail then.
The program has a 'Stay on Top-Interface', so it will always be
visible in the foreground.
3. How long do I have to wait for the requested files?
An acknowledgement message for the request received will be sent
to you immediately. How long the download will take depends on the
number and size of the requested files naturally. Therefore the
time needed may vary between some minutes and several hours. You
may however inform yourself about the status of your requests on
our Web page.
You will probably not need all files immediately. It is often
sufficient to receive the files during the next online session
the following day, too. But with "FULL-SPEED", then.
4. Frequently answered questions (FAQ)
Q: When I am using the UrlRequester 2.0X I am getting the error
message "Unhandled State of Exception: Read-Error 6, The access
number is undefined". [Transcribed word by word, I am no PC user -
Translator's comment]
A: This problem arises for some people who have an T-Online account.
[A German ISP - Translator's comment]
Try to build up an Internet connection via the communications
network with the original Microsoft Winsock Dlls (the UrlRequester
has also been tested with it).
Q: I have the UrlRequester 2.0X. When I try to send a request, it
seems absolutely nothing is coming trough.
A: Since version 2 requests are sent directly to Downloadslave, mails
are not sent any more. (Exception: The request of a password.) For
it's functionality UrlRequester needs access via the ports 1500
and 1504. So, if you are 'sitting' behind a Firewall (resp. Proxy)
please check if these ports are let through.
Q: When I send a request to the Downloadslave I'm receiving no reply
at all.
A: Please pay attention to send all requests to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Always keep in mind that your password is needed in the mail body
in the form of
PASS:YOURPASSWD
too.
Using our program UrlRequester would be the best. The most important
thing is entering your own e-mail and the password correctly there.
Q: On small files everything functions wonderful. But when I request
a bigger file, I'm just getting an error message or no answer at
all.
A: Your inbox at many Online Services (like T-Online, AOL, CompuServe,
gmx.net etc.) may be restricted to a certain size. Some providers
limit the size of a single mail, too. We cannot deliver the mail
if it exceeds one of these limits. Please avoid unnecessary
traffic by only requesting files which will fit into your inbox.
Q: I would like to download several files. When is it useful to give
more than one file name in a single request?
A: The possibility of giving several URLs in a single mail is useful
if you want to receive all files in a single reply, too (because
the files are connected with each other, for instance). The reply
will only be sent to you when all files are processed. It is
therefor more sensible to send different requests for files which
do not correlate. If the files are relatively big (> 500 K) they
should be requested in separate messages in any case (that is one
mail per file).
Q: Which maximum file size is allowed for requests via the
Downloadslave?
A: Please gather the current maximum file size from our homepage.
Q: I have used Downloadslave a few times successfully, but now I'm
getting no response at all on my requests.
A: Downloadslave bars users automatically if it sees frequent
problems in mail delivering. You have the option to free your
account via Downloadstatus for yourself, however. Please pay
attention to request only files which do not "blow up" your inbox.
Please also switch off your autoresponder, if you have one. Always
write new mails for new requests. (Please do not answer mails from
Downloadslave, because it would interprete them as incorrectly
delivered messages, then.)
Q: I have requested a relatively long URL, but Downloadslave did not
recognize it correctly. It has cut it in the middle! How can I
avoid this problem?
A: The most reliable method of requesting URLs is using the program
UrlRequester. This problem does not arise with it. If you do not
want to use the program, please pay attention to set the automatic
word-wrap in your mail software on a value big enough (for example
255). Switching over from HTML mail sending to text sending may
remedy the problem also.

If you want a homepage that is updated daily.
you could create something like that yourself... if you have an email-client
that can be run from a commandline you could create a batchfile/script that
reads something like
mail -to:www3@... < url-file.txt
and in url-file.txt you put the line "SEND http://..."
You also could save the original request to receive the homepage in a mail-
folder and simply send it again whenever you want.
If this is too cumbersome... you could also dig into your outmail-mail folder
(I think most clients will have that), look how msgs are stored and append a
request email to it using a batchfile at startup. (If you want to try this, make
sure that there aren't any relevant msgs stored...you might screw up the file
a couple of times before it works :-)

Bruno

Would you believe a batch file?
For all of you that want to know how to "glue" together many separate
uuencoded files, here is a DOS batch file that will do the work for you.
Here is one I use called CONCAT.BAT
@echo off
rem -
rem - CONCAT.BAT
rem - Copyright (c) 1994, Gerald E. Boyd
rem - [EMAIL PROTECTED]
rem -
if %1!==! goto one
if %2!==! goto two
for %%a in (%1*.uue) do echo copying %%a to %2.uue
for %%a in (%1*.uue) do type %%a >> %2.uue
goto done
:one
echo You didn't specify the INPUT file name
goto help
:two
echo You didn't specify the OUTPUT file name
:help
echo.
echo This batch file copies files file1.uue, file2.uue...filen.uue
echo into newfile.uue. On the command line specify the name
echo of the input file and output file. i.e. file newfile
echo "C:\>CONCAT file newfile"
echo.
echo If your filenames are just file1, file2...filen then
echo remove the ".uue" from this batch file.
echo.
:done
Make sure you run this in a "clean" directory where all the files are
already in order. That is, you saved them as file1.uue,
file2.uue...filen.uue If you saved them out of order then they will be
combined out of order. In my case I never have to worry about this
because I always sort the directory first before running the batch file.
NOTE: If you are running Win95 -- then watch out for sorting directories
because you will trash your long filenames. You must run the LFNBK
utility or have a specific Win95 utility program to sort directories. No
problem for DOS, Win 3.x, or OS/2 users (:>)
This batch file can be improved to automagically place the "1" , "2" ,
etc. in the file name if you desire. Use the FOR %%variable IN (set) DO
command.
If you don't know how to use DOS, then shame on you (:>)

OK, but if those are binary files (ZIPs are) you must include /B
COPY /B GAME.PA1 + GAME.PA2 + GAME.PA3 + GAME.PA4 GAME.ZIP

This may come as a shock to you.. but 'join' doesn't exsist, or in the way
you want. What you can do is, lets say part 1 is called GAME.PA1, part 2 is
GAME.PA2, part 3 is GAME.PA3, and part4 is GAME.PA4, and it was in ZIP
format, you could do this:
at the dos prompt:
COPY GAME.PA1 + GAME.PA2 + GAME.PA3 + GAME.PA4 GAME.ZIP
meaning copy game.pa1 and game.pa2 and game.pa3 and game.pa4 together into
GAME.ZIP

Accmailers,
It is my sad duty to inform you that the UK Agora ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
will be shutdown to outside access. Here is the official notice from Hugh
Sasse:
Recent changes in University Policy with regard to the freedom
of access to the Internet make it impractical to
continue running the service for people outside the University.
Users were already aware that this service was not being
provided in any official way by the University. The loss to
the ACCMAIL community is regretted, but those wishing to
establish new servers are welcome to have the source code
(which is in Perl).

Well, ok, the next time we all should ask "who is going to translate
this text" first. Two people working on exactly the same task is a
waste of resources and time, I would say. In this case I think /your/

If you want to help me personally a bit, would you be so kind to have

I have seen two DOS executables named "splitz" and "jointz"
somewhere, but unfortunately they were from a commercial package
named "Art Department Professional" on the Amiga. This is an old
package for the scanning and manipulation of graphics.
I do not think they are freely distributable.

You will laugh, but it may even read as non-understandable English to
someone who knows resp. can read the original text.
It is a common joke in Germany to translate German expressions to
English word by word. It is called "English for runaways", which
means "English for advanced students" if you take the original
expression and twist it a bit at both ends. <g>
The bigger part of these "jokes" I am not getting at once. I think
I am just too good in understanding English already. That is, I jump
to the real meaning of the words directly and therefore do not
understand the "English" sentence, instead of translating it back to
German first. There were jokes I did not understand at all - I had to
have them explained to me. A joke that derives from my mother tongue,
come to think about it! <g>

I'm literally taking questions on this list any more to mean if "there is a
site" that does what a person requests. You can always accomplish most any
task by writing a program, using DOS bat files, or using Unix commands.
However, lately, it appears as though most users on this list mean some
server that does what they ask, rather than means of coding.
So my answers now tend towards no and nope...
