"The 4u-series" from Bob Appleton

These files show in specific detail how to use email to
retrieve files, programs and documents from FTP and WWW sites, etc.
In other words, how to get just about anything by email. The files
are FREE and everything mentioned in them is also FREE. You can now
get these files individually or together in zipped format as well as
in text format. Substitute the file that you want in place of the XXX
in the URL below and add a line for each additional file requested.
Files available are:
email4u.txt getit4u.txt fun4u.txt pix4u.txt
email4u.zip getit4u.zip fun4u.zip pix4u.zip 4useries.zip

Send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and in the body of the message:

send ftp://ftp.crl.com/users/iv/iverham/XXX

Only the .txt files are available here:

send http://members.aol.com/bombagirl/freeware/XXX

They are also available via an autoresponder.
Send a blank message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This will tell you how to get each of the documents. They are the full
text, not zipped, so Juno users won't be able to get the email4u file.

Mail should have a meaningful subject heading which reflects the
content of the message -- it helps others to find messages of interest
(and is necessary if you receive a lot of messages per day), and it
helps to follow a thread on a particular topic.

Non-meaningful subjects are:
1. empty or blank subjects
2. Subject: I need help
3. Subject: A question
4. Subject: Re: ACCMAIL Digest ....

Make sure your post isn't off-topic. In particular, this mailing
list doesn't deal with topics like:

- Do you want to make $$$.
- I want to chat with someone.
- Hi, I'm new to the list and I want to make friends.
- General use of your computer -- instead ask a specific question like
is there a FAQ available on modems?
- Where do I get this or that software -- instead ask how to retrieve it
  via email.
- Where do I find information on ??? -- instead ask how do I find
  information concerning ??? via email.
- Windows 95 problems -- instead ask where do I find information
regarding a problem (email address, mailing list, web page. etc.)

===================
N E T I Q U E T T E
===================

DON'T include the entire contents of a previous posting in your reply.

DO cut mercilessly. Leave just enough to indicate what you're
responding to. NEVER include mail headers except maybe the "From:"
line. If you can't figure out how to delete lines in your mailer
software, paraphrase or type the quoted material in.

DON'T SEND A MESSAGE IN ALL CAPS. CAPITALIZED MESSAGES ARE HARDER TO
READ THAN LOWER CASE OR MIXED CASE.

DO use normal capitalization. Separate your paragraphs with blank
lines. Make your message inviting to your potential readers.

DON'T send messages with HTML coding or MIME extensions.

DO learn how to change your E-mail program so that it sends only plain
text ASCII to the list.

Make things easy for the recipient. Many mailers strip header
information which includes your return address. In order to ensure that
people know who you are, be sure to include a line or two at the end of
your message with contact information. You can create this file ahead
of time and add it to the end of your messages. (Some mailers do this
automatically.) In Internet parlance, this is known as a ".sig" or
"signature" file. Your .sig file takes the place of your business card.
(And you can have more than one to apply in different circumstances.)

If you include a signature keep it short. Rule of thumb is no longer
than 4 lines. Remember that many people pay for connectivity by the
minute, and the longer your message is, the more they pay.

Remember that people with whom you communicate are located across the
globe. If you send a message to which you want an immediate response,
the person receiving it might be at home asleep when it arrives. Give
them a chance to wake up, come to work, and login before assuming the
mail didn't arrive or that they don't care.

In general, most people who use the Internet don't have time to answer
general questions about the Internet and its workings. Don't send unsoli
cited mail asking for information to people whose names you might have
seen on mailing lists (especially *MINE*)

Just from my experience: Unganisha has been more reliable and faster

If you've typed your request correctly and the requested URL is also o.k.,

Another possibility suggested by IBMDOS 5.0's help for the
COPY command (use COPY/?) is the following:

> To append files, specify a single file for destination, but
> multiple files for source (using wildcards or file1+file2+file3
                                   ^^^^^^^^^
> format).

     So instead of using:

            COPY FILE.001+FILE.002+FILE.003 FILE.UUE

you can just enter:

                      COPY FILE.* FILE.UUE

or some similar usage. The required preparations are that all
the headers are stripped off the uuencoded parts except for part
one. Also, you can not have any other files in the directory of
type FILE.* or they will also be added at some place in the
destination file.

Sincerely,

I e-spoke way too soon and now I have to ammend my words. I
did little more experimentation with this, after I sent the first
message of course.

I learned that the COPY command isn't quite as smart as I
took for granted. It does do as above BUT, it does not first
sort the source files by name or extension. Instead, it appends
them by what time they were created. So, for the above simple
form to work you need to make sure that the parts were saved into
the directrory in the same time order as they are named.

I tried to simplify the process and only confused the issue.
Boy, computers sure can be dumb! I guess that's why the operator
has to be smarter than the computer. I'm in trouble.

Couldn't agree more. As I always teach in my computer classes, computers
are "obedient idiots", they do exactly as told (programmed) and no more.
The operator (programmer) has to be extremely logical.

Unfortunately, too many instructions are written in "computerese" which
doesn't help the matter. Another reason for the KISS (Keep It Simple,
Stupid) principle.

yes, for win9x.

File Split

File Split is an Application which splits a single File into several
Files with a certain Filesize.
It can rejoin multiple files into one file by contacting them one by
one into a chosen single file.

Get it from simtel.
It was in the win95/fileutil or something like that

Good luck

Is it possible to download files and/or images from www through agora www4mail, or

Which other (if any)?

I mean something like wwwfetch (do you remember?) but free.
Asking for COURCE to agora servers, they retrieve only the paeg format, but not data

Any suggestion?

There are a few possible settings for the way you can receive messages
from a listserv list:

* In order to receive messages in a non-digest format (as seperate
messages) senda message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the following
line as the BODY of your message:

SET ACCMAIL NODIG

For those who are already set their subscription to receive messages
seperate there are a few further options:

according to the following keywords (use only one of them):
1) FULLHDR
to receive messages will all header fields

2) SHORTHDR
to receive only header fields which a typical subscriber may use.

3) SUBJECTHDR
similar to full header but the messages you receive from Accmail will
include the tag [Accmail] added to the subject of Accmail's messages.

4) DUALHDR
adds the important headers to the BODY of the messages from Accmail.
It is good when one uses a network that removes the original headers.

You may use one of the keywords in a command in the following manner.
SET ACCMAIL keyword
e.g.
SET ACCMAIL SUBJECTHDR

(as before all Listserv commands shoulds be posted to the listserv address
i.e. to [EMAIL PROTECTED])

You may combine the above command with nodig e.g.
SET ACCMAIL NODIG SHORTHDR

if one does not recieve messages in a Digest format, and willing to
receive them in a digest format, there are to types of digest formats:
"MIME Digest" and "NOMIME Digest".
"NOMIME Digest" is a format in which Listserv bundles many messages into
one message and the messages in the digest are just piled one below the
other.
"MIME Digest" also refer to bundling messages into a single message, but
Listserev Uses MIME extension, and those e-mail programs which support it,
allow the digest message to be seen as a folder which includes all
messages as if they were messages in that folder.
This option requires that the e-mail program will support it, and
otherwise the NOMIME sigest is better.

Setting to a digest format with MIME is made by the command:
SET ACCMAIL DIG MIME
or setting to a digest with NOMIME:
SET ACCMAIL DIG NOMIME

Those who like to read only few messages, may ask to receive only the
index of the messages posted each day, by using the command:
SET ACCMAIL INDEX

You will then receive each day only the list of messages including a
serial number for each of them, and you may use the reply option to
request those messages that are of interest to you.

I summarized only the important options for how to receive messages.
A list of all options you may receive by sending the command:
INFO REFCARD
to the Listserv address.

I got a message from the maintainer of the site at CRL that since she
intend to leave soon the CRL ISP she has no intention to update the
version of ua.txt there to the recent one.

Also at bombagirl's address the update is delayed.

So at the moment Usenet Access Guide can be retreived either by sending an
empty message to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
or in a zipped and uuencoded format by sending an empty message to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
or from http://www.wireworm.com/ua/ua.txt ,
or http://www.wireworm.com/ua/ua.zip (zip compressed).
The Geocities site also has the recent version. CRL and AOL sites have a
very old version.
