Hi Alexander, :-)
I reply to you on-list and in English because some others also
may be interested.
> For example. TSOURCE HTTP://WWW.DEEP-PURPLE.COM returns to me
> file RPLE_COM.HTM. Though I know exactly that _real_file_name
> is WELCOME.HTM.
More often it is not welcome.htm. w3mail always named sent files
in such situations as welcome.htm (if uuencoded), but real name
usually is different. It depends on web-server's software, and with
some web-servers (it seems for me that <http://www.geocities.com>
among them) default names can vary in different directories, webmasters
select them. For example, if you ask for my homepage specifying
<http://www.halyava.ru/elena/> or <http://elena.stealth.ru>
then the file index.html from my directory will be sent by the
web-server. Ask for <http://www.halyava.ru/elena/index.html> or
<http://elena.stealth.ru/index.html> and you'll receive same file
(only text counter and may be the gratis web-server's advertisement code
will differ). I'm not sure, probably I could name this file index.htm
instead of index.html. How web-server chooses which file to send
if filename wasn't specified in URL, is described in manuals/help-files
for webmasters on exact web-server. For used by me web-server its FAQ
<http://www.halyava.ru/doc/faq.html> explain (in Russian):
| : ,
| , http://www.halyava.ru/vasyapupkin?
| : index.html.
| html,
| http://werbach.com/barebones/#russian
I translate for other readers:
| Question: Which file from my directory will be shown if only
| name of my directory is specified, http://www.halyava.ru/vasyapupkin?
| Answer: Such file must be named index.html. I recommend to read
| HTML documentation on http://werbach.com/barebones/#russian
> And now the same question: How can I figure out real file name?
Sometimes there is a link with filename somewhere pointing to
this page. If you get same content when you ask without filename
and with some filename, then you can suppose that it's real filename
used by web-server when filename isn't specified. Or sometime
you can find documentation for the web-server's software.
You can guess, try index.html, index.htm, welcome.html, welcome.htm,
default.html, default.htm. But usually you really needn't to know
real filename (see below).
> How do mailserver (and not only it) know what file send to me
> if file name isn't given?
Mailserver doesn't know filename. Mailserver just asks web-server
for given URL, without filename. Web-server chooses exact file.
Same with online browsers.
> I want to build local mirrors of small pieces
> some web-servers.
Then you must comply with conventions of software used by you
for access to your local mirror. If convention of your software
(which default name to use if filename isn't specified) differs from
that of mirrored web-server then you can end with two identical files
with different names in some directories, but it's just small waste
of disk space.
If you don't know conventions of the software you intend to use
then make empty directory, try to access it by the software
not specifying filename, and see filename in the "file not found"
error message.
If your software requires always specify filename then
you can invent your own conventions. Or use real filenames
(if you can determine them - it not always is possible).
If my explanation isn't clear for you then describe how local users
will have access to your local mirror, which software you intend
to use.
Uspehov, :)
Lena

here is a non-accmail answer (i.e. requires on-line web access):
there is this web page that lets you search domain names. enter the
following in your browser:
http://www.netcraft.com/cgi-bin/Survey/hosts?host=whatever
replace "whatever" with the domain name you wish to search. for
example, to search "ftpsearch" use:
http://www.netcraft.com/cgi-bin/Survey/hosts?host=ftpsearch
[check the recent accmail FAQ on how to access the above page by e-
mail.]

allow me to revisit the above question. there are ISPs who don't
setup NNTP server, and hence don't offer USENET access -- for various
reasons. i understand that there are public-access NNTP servers, and
also websites that give USENET feeds (for example
http://w.deja.com/home_bg.shtml)
may i request accmailers to share if they know of any service (or
tip) that lets one access USENET groups through e-mail, preferably as
a mailing list (listserv, etc.).

The mailserver will get what the web-server offers. The mail-server receives your
e-mail
command, and connects to the specified web-server to fetch the URL.
Each web-server is configurated to use a default file name for the URLs that end in a
directory name. Usually, the default name is index.html or welcome.html, but this is
the
system administrator's choice.
When you use that kinf of URL in a web-browser and there is no default file in that
directory, you may receive the directory index (like after DIR commands)!

Besides recommending you to read the Usenet Access Guide (send an empty
message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or to [EMAIL PROTECTED] in order ro
receive the file either in text format or zip compressed and uuencoded),
Anyone who has a direct access to Usenet may use Deja (formerly called
DejaNews) via e-mail.
It is an excellent service for those who prefer receiving Usenet messages
via e-mail and the options are great: either messages from a specific
newsgroup as if it was a mailing list, or messages that fall into search
profiles that you set.
It is a new part of the MyDeja personalized service.
The only problem with this service that should concern Accmailers, is that
the subscription/signoff from the service, and any change in the personal
profile for the service can be done only via WWW with a browser that
support cookies. The searches, however are also kept in Dejanews, and you
can use a browser which does not belong to you in a manner which will not
cause a problem with cookies being set on a computer which is not yours,
cookies will be deleted after you "logout" from your MyDeja account, after
making/changing the settings for the newsgroups/search_profiles via e-mail
The entry point is: http://www.deja.com/mydn.xp
