Subject: GRIPE: Missing Subject Lines
This email address is mostly my "mailing list" address; I receive stuff from
high-volume lists and occasional announcement lists here. Because I have to
do a lot of sifting of "the wheat from the chaff", I may download 100
messages at a time and delete all but 10 before I even start reading.
I have noticed, particularly on this list, PARTICULARLY among those with
non-American names and domains (esp. orientals and arabs, it seems), a great
propensity to leave the subject line blank. When that line is blank, I'm
often at a loss for what to do. Should I delete it with the attitude "if it's
not important enough to put a subject line on, it's not worth my time to read
it", or read it with the attitude "if they don't know enough to include a
subject line, they may be in WORSE need of help"? I tend to do the former;
you may have posted a message that I would be willing to help with, but
deleted it because it didn't have a subject line.
And today in one message download, our own Gerry Boyd left out the subject
line; TWICE! (Bad example, Gerry!)
C'mon folks, if we're going to help each other out, let's at least put in the
subject line what we're discussing.
Thanks for tolerating my rant.

Subject: html forms and uuencode
Hey folks I hope this helps with teh filling out html forms via email
thing and a another way to decode uuencode with out other stuff.
To Vlad Vork <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
For the html form filling thing, lets say there's a form in this url:
http://soso.com/form.html, just send this plainly as is in the body of
your message to a www4server. Like this:
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
subject: (you may leave this blank0
Body of message: the url here (like http://soso.com/form.html)
and you should get the html form back from the server, of the form you
want. Answer this as you normally would like you were online, and thn
click on the submit form. This should prompt you with a warning that
this form is not secure and maybe be seen by other parties or what ever,
just click okay and then the form is sent via email again. This doesn't
show up on your 'sent' folder though. You should get a response from the
www4server back with the reply request of your form. Unfortunately, I've
tired doing this to get a free pop email (i.e. mypad.com and
mailandnews.com, and I can't seem to get thru. Maybe because ww4servers
don't support *.pl files? Anyway also I've tried this for subscribing to
horoscope list and it worked (try http://4yourhoroscope.com and see if
this works not sure about the url now though ...) ! Hope this helps!
To Ibrahim E Abdul-Hafiz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
As for the uuencode thing, this is something I discoverd on my own, and
I hope this helps you.
I got that once and I didn't know what to do. I figured this might work
and it did: copy the entire text of the email, starting from the the
part where its all gibberish like this:
begin blah blah_com.html
M/"$M+2!8+5523#H@:'1T<#HO+W=W=RYD;F%I+F-O;2]^:FYA<G9A97HO("TM
upto the end part;
M,3DY-SPO23X\+T(^/"]A/@H\0E(^"CPO0T5.5$52/@H\+T)/1%D^"CPO2%1-
#3#X@
`
end
And put them in notepad or if not some text editor. Save the file as
filename.uue This file will show up in the directory where you saved it
as a zipped file and you can open it from there and it should have the
thing you want in there in its original file type: exe, html, ps etc.
...
Hope this helps!! Oh and Gerry thanks for that link - I'll just go get a
www4server to fetch it for me, as of typing this email, I haven't
checked out that url! =) But thanks in advance!

Subject: Mail Server
Hello!
Despite my complaints to the server administrator, some times receiving
of mails seems erratic. Looking for some advise on the following :
1. If the mail server is down, does the mail get bounced back to the
sender? Do the sender's server try again. If so how long?
2. In case of over load or traffic on the net, do the mails get delayed.
Is there a possibility of the mails getting lost also?
3. Is there a sort of filter mechanism at the server holding some mails
giving priority or cancelling certain mails etc.
Thanks

Hi Accmailers!
Does anyone remember the "Email Web Viewer" By "Stuart
Clarke"<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ?
Well I never got round to making it work for me because I'm behind a
corporate firewall, but it's Great!!! Stuart must've improved upon it by
now.
With this software we can browse the Internet by email. The browser
sends an email request for a web page and we can then view the page
offline. This could be great for people having email access only.
It requires Netscape Navigator and uses it to display the web page
requested by email. (I think it's something we now do using the www4
servers, request link by link and then view them)

Maybe some of you guys may know about this but I haven't heard of
anythig since that time when this software was mentioned...probably
somewhere in August 1997. Therefore I was just wondering how come no one
has been talking about this or have they been?
Actually these files were hidden in an old backup of my HDD and I just
stumbled upon them.
I was so happy that I decided to tell you all!!!
Hope this is useful to you,

Being as you sent this same note to two mailings lists, I'd bet the
problem is on your end.
First off a couple of points to be mentioned...
1) Always include a subject in your postings. It helps the members to
decide whether or not the posting should be read. Many members just
delete postings without subject lines.
2) If you are having problems with a mailing list you should send the
comments to the list owner, NOT the mailing list. Most members of the
list consider these messages to be off topic and a waste of time and
resources.
3) You should always check your own subscription to make sure you were
not automatically deleted from the list due to bounces from your
mailing address. To check your subscription and options send E-mail
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [leave blank]
Body of message:
QUERY HELP-NET
or
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [leave blank]
Body of message:
QUERY ACCMAIL
4) It is NOT up to the list owner to make sure you receive mail. It is
up to you. Subscriptions to the list, digest compilation, archiving,
and signoff requests are all handled automatically by the listserv
software. Unless there is a failure somewhere with listserv, then most
mailing problems are due to the subscribers address, ISP, or mail
server problems.

First part the answer is yes. The sender receives a bounce message:
Here are some example bounces:
----- Transcript of session follows -----
... while talking to disjoint.news.demon.net.:
<<< 554 SMTP service not available
... while talking to seth.news.demon.net.:
>>> QUIT
<<< 554 SMTP service not available
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>... Deferred: Connection reset by
seth.news.demon.net.
Warning: message still undelivered after 12 hours
Will keep trying until message is 5 days old
So you can see from this bounce that the sender will try again and
again until 5 days are up at which time the sender will quit.
Some bounces are self explanatory
550 <...>... User unknown
550 <...>... Host unknown
451 <...>... Name server timeout
550 <...>... Mailbox disabled for software upgrade reasons
550 <...>... Mailbox full
In the above types of bounces, the sender doesn't try to send the mail
again.
>2. In case of over load or traffic on the net, do the mails get delayed.
>Is there a possibility of the mails getting lost also?
Delays yes, losses very very very rarely...
>3. Is there a sort of filter mechanism at the server holding some mails
>giving priority or cancelling certain mails etc.
The sender's ISP can give higher priority to mail sent by
administrators over regular users. That is, Netcom could give a higher
priority to mail sent by a system administrator over mail sent by me.
However, this is not normally the case.
Mail is normally only cancelled when the administrator notices a system
hang due to a piece of mail, or if the mail server is having problems.
Another case of automatic mail cancellation occurs with the new "spam"
prevention methods that most ISPs have installed. You can see this when
you receive a bounced mail that says something like "we do not relay"

Out of all the traceroute locations I know of, you can only trace from
the host location to your site or another site. I don't know ofy any
traceroute servers that allow you to enter two separate locations and
trace between them.
The only one that I know of that comes close, is the Multiple
Traceroute site. You can enter any IP address or domain name but must
selct from a list of sites for the other end of the trace.
The web page is here:
