Yes, 5 months back, when I had just joined this list and was just lurking,
that was the discussion which seemed recurring over a few days.
Most of the majority who wished the stats to be continued had then
expressed that, the stats as important resource and it would be convenient to
get them with the rest of the postings of this list etc.
As a newbie wishing to try out things which raise curiosity, I had then
subscribed to get the stats daily using the following tip which
appears daily in the stats :
><
Want this list every day? Send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and in the
body of your message put "join statistics" (no quotes)
><
After starting to get the stats daily, I noticed a point on the time gap
between
posting of our ACCMAIL digest and the posting of stats - I found that
daily the direct posting from netserves.com was always the latest. To put
it another way, the stats that I would get in our digest on a day would be the
one which I would have got already previous day direct from netserves.com.
The time gap is due to the fact that a day's ACCMAIL digest gets posted
approximately 5 minutes after midnight local time of US Eastern Time zone,
for which, time zone is -05:00 in Standard and -04:00 in Daylight Saving.
The stats from netserves.com gets posted at 06:00 local time of London
for which time zone is 0:00 (GMT) in Standard and +01:00 in Daylight saving.
Translating the posting times to same time zone, we see that daily,
the stats gets posted nearly 01 hour AFTER an ACCMAIL digest gets
posted.
So everyday ACCMAIL digest brings a stats posting which is
already approx. 23 hours old since it was put out! Even if one is getting
ACCMAIL
postings in non digest way, ie., postings coming individually after moderator
approves, the stats coming with it, cannot possibly reach one faster than ,
coming directly from netserves.com , can it?
If stats are so useful to those who find it so, shoud they not make use of
the latest available rather than an already older one ?
However...
I am NEUTRAL on the question of removing the stats from the list (if
the polling is still open, that is !)

I mentioned this on this list within the last week. The InternetTrash
site allows you to do this, so does(did) the AngelFire site.
The old work SunZoomSpark did at the AngelFire site is located on their
InternetTrash site. You can get this old work (probably out of date) at:

Wouldn't be very interesting to receive this report more oftenly?
Is it automatized or hand-made?
A final question:
The report also says

Is it the real country of this AccMailers, or 1207 just stems
from *.com, *.net, *.edu, *.org, etc, email addresses?
I mean, [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] and

It's from the review command. The list review command is suppressed and
only I can see it. However, I don't know what happens with the country
option. Try it and see if it works.

The country option on the review command says this is the List Owner's
Manual:
by country of origin (ISO country codes)
Now if we look at the ISO country codes listing we find a couple of notes:
V. .edu, .com, etc.
The domains in this section are special in that some of them are
used in more than one country. The domains which have full internet
access are marked accordingly.
See Note [5] for the next top level domains (rs.internic.net):
COM Commercial
EDU Educational
GOV Government
INT International field
MIL US Military
NET Network
ORG Non-Profit Organization
The ISO country code listing is available by E-mail from rtfm.mit.edu by
sending an E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] , blank subject line
and the command: send usenet/news.answers/mail/country-codes

As I wrote earlier, it is a bug in LISTSERV.
LISTSERV counts the .us +all three character extensions as USA
subscribers, which is of-course incorrect.
I checked it with my list (Help-Net) which runs by version 1.8c of
Listserv, and it does count .edu .com .org and .net as USA only.
Accmail runs by version 1.8d , but .us domains (and .gov and .mil) are not
too common. So I have no doubts that they didn't fix this problem on 1.8d.

Subject: Virus Warning or "spam" Hoax??
Hello, Gerry!
Hello everybody!
Just today we received from a friend in Belgium a warning against a new
virus.
Apparently the virus comes in a message with the subject: "Penpal
Greetings".
It infests your hard disk erasing all data in the boot sector. It is also
self replicating and automatically sends itself to all the e-mail addresses
in your address book and even to e-mail addresses in your inbox.
The funny thing is, the warning encourages you to repeat this warning to
everyone you know, thus creating a spam-like situation.
Does anyone have any serious confirmation about this virus, or is it the
usual hoax?
Thanks for reading.
Best regards,
Jos Llufro

Old hoax...
Rule of thumb:
In virtually every case, email warnings and alerts which contain a
sentence like "You must pass this on to everyone you know!" are hoaxes.
Further reasons to be suspicious: the message is unsigned; it offers no
references to back up its claims, and there is no way for recipients to
authenticate the information.

Subject: GULLIBILITY VIRUS - READ THIS NOW!!!
********************************************************************
WARNING, CAUTION, DANGER, AND BEWARE!
Gullibility Virus Spreading over the Internet!
********************************************************************
WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Institute for the Investigation of Irregular
Internet Phenomena announced today that many Internet users are
becoming infected by a new virus that causes them to believe
without question every groundless story, legend, and dire warning
that shows up in their Inbox or on their browser. The Gullibility
Virus, as it is called, apparently makes people believe and forward
copies of silly hoaxes relating to cookie recipes, E-Mail viruses,
taxes on modems, and get-rich-quick schemes [perhaps conspiracy
theories should be included here].
"These are not just readers of tabloids or people who buy lottery
tickets based on fortune cookie numbers," a spokesman said. "Most
are otherwise normal people, who would laugh at the same stories if
told to them by a stranger on a street corner." However, once
these same people become infected with the Gullibility Virus, they
believe anything they read on the Internet.
"My immunity to tall tales and bizarre claims is all gone,"
reported one weeping victim. "I believe every warning message and
sick child story my friends forward to me, even though most of the
messages are anonymous."
Another victim, now in remission, added, "When I first heard about
'Good Times,' I just accepted it without question. After all,
there were dozens of other recipients on the mail header, so I
thought the virus must be true." It was a long time, the victim
said, before she could stand up at a Hoaxees Anonymous meeting and
state, "My name is Jane, and I've been hoaxed." Now, however, she
is spreading the word. "Challenge and check whatever you read," she
says.
Internet users are urged to examine themselves for symptoms of the
virus, which include the following:
* the willingness to believe improbable stories without thinking
* the urge to forward multiple copies of such stories to others
* a lack of desire to take three minutes to check to see if a
story is true
T. C. is an example of someone recently infected. He told one
reporter, "I read on the Net that the major ingredient in almost
all shampoos makes your hair fall out, so I've stopped using
shampoo." When told about the Gullibility Virus, T . C. said he
would stop reading e-mail, so that he would not become infected.
Anyone with symptoms like these is urged to seek help immediately.
Experts recommend that at the first feelings of gullibility,
Internet users rush to their favorite search engine and look up the
item tempting them to thoughtless credence. Most hoaxes, legends,
and tall tales have been widely discussed and exposed by the
Internet community.
Courses in critical thinking are also widely available, and there
is online help from many sources, including
* Rob Rosenberger's "Reality Check on viruses"
at http://www.kumite.com/myths
* Department of Energy Computer Incident Advisory Capability at
http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html
* The Urban Legends Web Site at http://www.urbanlegends.com
* The Stiller Research virus hoax page
at: http://www.stiller.com\hoaxes.htm
Those people who are still symptom free can help inoculate themselves
against the Gullibility Virus by reading some good material on
evaluating
sources, such as
* Evaluating Internet Research Sources at
http://www.sccu.edu/faculty/R_Harris/evalu8it.htm
* Evaluation of Information Sources at
http://www.vuw.ac.nz/~agsmith/evaln/evaln.htm
* Bibliography on Evaluating Internet Resources at
http://refserver.lib.vt.edu/libinst/critTHINK.HTM
Lastly, as a public service, Internet users can help stamp out the
Gullibility Virus by sending copies of this message to anyone who
forwards them a hoax.
*******************************************************************
Forward this message to all your friends right away! Don't think
about it! This is not a chain letter! This story is true! Don't
check it out! This story is so timely, there is no date on it!
This story is so important, we're using lots of exclamation
points!!! For every message you forward to some unsuspecting
person, the Home for the Hopelessly Gullible will donate ten cents
to itself. (If you wonder how the Home will know you are forwarding
these messages all over creation, you're obviously thinking too
much.)
*******************************************************************
BTW, I hope you enjoy this is as much as I do. Even though this is very
old, I thought it might be time to post it again (:>)
