There is a way for a list owner to set the maximum size of each digest
message. The digest will be released periodically, but if the size has
reached, it will be released once it happen, and then, the buffer will be
cleaned so when the time for the periodical release has come only the rest
will be released.

The place where all the definitions for the list are written is called the
list header (which should not be confused with the header of messages
from the list).

You can retreive the header of the HELP-NET list by sending a message to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] with the following line as the BODY of your
message:
REV HELP-NET

(an equivalent command can be sent for other Listserv lists as well)
Two comments:

a) While usually, the review command will send you only the header of the
list, for some lists, it will send you the list of non-concealed
subscribers, which might become a huge file. This does not hold to Accmail
or Help-Net.

b) If you use the command "Info list_name" instead of "rev listname", then
sometimes you will get an info file and sometimes the header of the list,
it is safer for people who are afraid to use the "rev" command because of
comment (a).

c) Version 1.8d of Listserv allows the owner to hide parts of the list
header from the public, this does not exist in earlier versions of
Listserv. Accmail runs on version 1.8d , Help-Net on version 1.8c .
I don't think that there are hidden parts on Accmail's header.

The line in the header of Help-Net list which is relevant here is:

* Digest= Yes,Same,Daily,00,Size(1000)

"Yes" means the digest option is enabled.
"Same" has to do with the location of the files used for the digest.
"Daily" means that digests will be released every day.
"00" means that the daily digest will be released on midnight.
"Size(1000)" means that whenever the size of the digest has reached 1000
lines, a digest is released even if it is not yet midnight (another one
will be released at midnight). Notice that it is triggering the release,
and not a spliting option, so that the last message will be posted in full
even if this means that the actual number of lines is more than
1000.

It might worth to consider such also in other mailing lists.

Subject: about this 'help split'

So okay, when I send out requests to the ww4servers to get me a zipped
file or other, it sends me this message too: HELP TIP: For more
information send the command "help mime" For help with recombining split
file(s) send command "help split"

I've managed so far, after I've figured out copy /b file.1+file.2=file.3
thingy in dos and gotten all the split files together. Well, my
question is, is how do they split these files anyway? Is there a way fer
lil ole me to be able to do the same too? What program do they use to
split these files?

Thanks for any answers!!

You, and anyone else are quite welcome.

> Will this computer be encountering problems by year 2000?

I'm afraid I'm just not in a good position to comment
on various makes, save for my own. People will just have to
read up on the matter, take a deep breath, and test their
machines to find out. But, I see Gerald Boyd has made a great
post on doing just that. If people don't test their automata
now, they'll find out for sure in about seven months.

I pretty well said everything pertinant to Y2KWA in
the text file that comes with it and would not to try making
this a YWKWA discussion list. I know now that would not fly.
Individual resourcefulness will have to do the rest.

        Respectfully,

     {several good options snipped}

Depending on what wang wenjie has in mind, if we interpret "accmail
approach" loosely to mean a setup that handles messages without a
lot of expensive hardware and software, then another approach might
be to set up a BBS, or offer to be a Co-Sysop or message moderator
 on somebody else's.

There are many types of BBS software, most have extremely modest
hardware requirements. RBBS works for me; it's copyrighted
freeware (run it legally for free, just don't circulate modified
copies) and has complete source code (optional). The full release
has many options, including at the low extreme a version for an
ancient XT with a floppy drive and a single ordinary phone line.
 (My setup is fancier).

The last time I checked you could get all the software you need to
run RBBS and connect it to Fidonet (or any other Fido compatible
 network), at http://www.iobbs.com

A BBS has the advantage of easily handling many different topical
message groups from the same setup, and in addition can be readily
connected with other things, like special sections for file uploads
and downloads, and games. It should be possible to "gate in" the
Accmail list itself to a local message base.

Fidonet is the largest all-volunteer network I know, and its
standards and software are now used by many other networks.
Fidonet is one good way to find other Sysops in your area anywhere
in the world who will probably be willing to help you get started
with your own system. It has many fine international "Echoes"
 (topical message groups).

To let Internet callers connect more directly, Telnet software from
elsewhere could be added. I haven't done that yet, and would
 appreciate advice.

This site has been worthless since October 1998 when they had their
crash. It really has never worked correctly since that time. I wish it
would just disappear.

Nope... The only thing that comes close is Deja(News).com
