Well the Happy99 worm is spread via e-mail. Unless your 'friend' sent it to you on purpose, their computer is infected. You should tell them that they are infected. Aren't you glad your computer didn't run the attachment automatically? If 'gat96' is somebody unknown to you then G. Boyd's advice is good. Make sure you empty your "deleted messages" box too. Panic wasn't quite required as long as your mailer isn't set to automatically run attachments. The sender may well not be aware of his infection so needed to be told. more info is at http://members.tripod.co.uk/netmiser/happy99.htm ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 11:48:52 -0700 From: "Gerald E. The Domain Name System (DNS) is the process by which text names used to address facilities on the Internet, such as "netcom.com," are converted to the numbers that computers use, 192.100.81.114. All Internet destinations that can be found by name require an entry in a DNS server. DNS servers are arranged as a hierarchical database, with requests to convert a name to an IP numerical address or vice versa in the hierarchy. All domains must have at least two DNS entries, the primary and secondary DNS servers. The simplest way to get the DNS servers, is to do a whois query of the domain name. For example, a whois query on Netcom.com yields: Registrant: NETCOM On-Line Communication Services, Inc (NETCOM-DOM) 2 N Second Street San Jose, CA 95113 US Domain Name: NETCOM.COM Administrative Contact: NETCOM Abuse Department (NETCOM-NM) [EMAIL PROTECTED] (408) 881-1810 Technical Contact, Zone Contact: NETCOM Hostmaster (NETCOM-HM) [EMAIL PROTECTED] 888-698-HELP Fax- -408-881-3336 Billing Contact: NETCOM Accounts Payable (NETCOM-AP) [EMAIL PROTECTED] (408) 881-3328 Record last updated on 25-Mar-99. Record created on 01-Feb-91. Database last updated on 25-May-99 11:37:30 EDT. Domain servers in listed order: AS1.NETCOM.COM 206.217.29.220 AS2.NETCOM.COM 206.217.29.221 AS3.NETCOM.COM 199.183.9.4 AS4.NETCOM.COM 199.183.9.5 [...] So Netcom has 4 DNS servers - 2 primary and 2 secondary. -- Gerry Boyd -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 16:34:38 -0500 From: Mike Webb <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Accessing Web-Based Email from a POP3 client Original Subject: Re: Creating E-mail accounts without direct net access Was just going over my older email and remembered that there is a program out there that enables people with Hotmail and Mailcity accounts (Yahoo's next) to access their email by POP3/SMTP; it's called WebbyPOP and runs on your own computer, does a fast connect to the web sites, grabs the mail and passes it to the POP3 client of your choice. Available at your local Simtel.Net mirror. A couple of days ago I checked the fellow's home site and he said that because of IE5-related changes to Hotmail, WebbyPOP presently won't work on Hotmail, but he's working to fix it. Then I guess he'll be starting on Yahoo. Not quite what we're looking for, but it is an improvement. > From: "Gerald E. It's a communication service for everyone who has direct access to Internet. You cannot use ICQ by e-mail, but you can send e-mail messages with ICQ. Basically, ICQ consists of three parts: ICQ server (like icq.mirabilis.com), ICQ database and ICQ client (the softwware installed on the user's computer). The client program allows the client to connect to the server and to use the database. Each user gets an ICQ number (like a phone number) and may enter some personal data. The data entered is stored in the database, and may be seen by other ICQ users. The user will build a contacts list, adding other ICQ users he may find by name, by e-maila ddress or by ICQ number. Each time the user starts ICQ, the contacts list is on screen and if anyone from that list is online, a special icon appears next to his name, showing his status (connected, available for chat, away etc.). Short messages may be exchanged between online or offline users, but they may easily turn into a nice featured chat, or they may be completed by e-mail messages, sending files, URLs or contacts, or even voice messages. You may even find random chat partners. Some other features continue to be added, and they are available to any ICQ user, like Communication Center and Homepage. It seems to me that recently ICQ has been taken by AOL, ACCMAIL's host. I'm very pleased with it. When I'm online, I may see who of my contacts are online, and talk to them in real time. Have a nice time with ICQ! AdiM ------------------------------ End of ACCMAIL Digest - 25 May 1999 to 26 May 1999 (#1999-147) **************************************************************
