Subject: Search engines - Relevant statistics
O.K., no more arguing about this, we're stuck forever with the "FTPMail,
Agora, etc. statistics".
But what about Download Slave?
And what about the different SEARCH ENGINES?
When I need to search for something, I'd like to know more about the
actual performances of varioussearch engines , in order to choose one that
is best fitted.
Some data about capabilities and response time of current search engines
would be wellcome.
Sure, a question such as "which search engine is best?" is meaningless.
But i think it could be useful to have a survey about this:
1. Which search engine do you mostly use?
2. Why do you prefer it? What advantages does it has?
3. What was the average response time?
4. How many times did you get an error?
5.In which areas was it the best?
6. What are its best qualities?
7. What defficiencies does it has, and what does it seem to lack ("wish
list")?
8. etc.
I'm waiting for your comments and oppinions.
Ma. Cri.

There are two different acknowledgements:
(a) On moderated lists LISTSERV sends a message that posted messages
have been forwarded to the moderator for approval. This cannot be
turned off.
(b) LISTSERV can, if a subscriber wants, send an acknowledgement when
a message has been posted. The option is turned on with REPRO and
turned off with NOREPRO.
The first kind is there to make it easier for the moderator: without
it, he or she would often get questions like "what happened to my
message?".

Is this the "has been submitted to the moderator", which I still get,
or the ack that it has been posted. Because I no longer get that ack,
which everybody else gets.
If you get the latter, it would seem that we have found a bug in listserv,
if it is the first, the settings work, atleast partially.
May you live long and spamless,

Subject: A New Search Engine
I found a new search engine. It is called Google, and it is at
http://www.google.com. It returns many more references than the other
search engines. It sorts them so that the best sites are listed first.
There are many pages at google.com explaining how it works and giving tips
on how to search.
To search by mail you must send this to a web-by mail server
http://www.google.com/search?q=XXXXX
where XXXXX is the subject of your search.
Enjoy!

The only MIM file I know about is a Map Image Metafile which is an
ASCII text census map file. Description of this is at:
http://blue.census.gov/geo/www/mim/concept.html
>I have recently received several files that were attached to the

The Census bureau gives an example of how they changed a MIM file to a
PostScript file using mp2ps program then converted that to a GIF using
XV -- whatever these are.
How all this works, I'm clueless...

Yes, use a www4mail server to get the page. Fill-out the form, and
re-submit back to the same www4mail server.
The site uses a GET method so you can also use my "crack" methods to
submit it to an Agora server.
You can get the file by anonymous FTP at:
get ftp.netcom.com/pub/gb/gboyd/wscrack.faq
Or by Agora, Getweb, or W3mail
send ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/gb/gboyd/wscrack.faq

>And what about the different SEARCH ENGINES?
Yahoo -- when I'm clueless and need a category. This should only be
used for this pupose, not to find something directly. Example "nntp"
AltaVista - when I think the answer is at an educational site or I want
to constrain the search by host, domain, or url, or type or really
narrow down on something.
Inference - when I have a big long search string like "bubbles in the
liquid created light"
Google - Been using this a lot since March and might replace Inference
as my favorite. Good for 1 or 2 word searches. Example: "DSL experiences"
HotBot - When I want a literary document as a result. Also used to
constrain searches by type of file -- image, audio, Javascipt, VRML, etc.
Snap.com -- A newer and better Yahoo
Fast Search - this is a faitly new engine. I been using it for a couple
of months. It is fast but unfortunately it doesn't have many commands
to sift out the junk. I'm really trying to get a handle on how to use
it better.
FTPsearch -- when I want to find a file on an ftp site and I know most
of its name. Example: ftpmail to find ftpmail-1.25.tar.gz (source code
for ftpmail).
Foldoc - when I want a definition of a computer term.
Webopedia - When I want a definition of a computer term and some links.
Merriam-Webster - when a want a definition of an American (English) word
SimtelNet - when I want a piece of DOS software
C\Net shareware - when I want to find a Windows program
DejaNews - when I want to find an old Usenet posting or the learn what
a Usenet newsgroup specializes in.
Liszt - when I want to find a mailing list.
and more and more....
See my web page for all the ones I use:
