Hi, Gerald E. Boyd, and Accmailers,

Very Good Idea.

We should do it with all the servers that would shutt down.

Gerry, could you ever (like in this case) make public (on the list) the addresses of
the owners of any server
that will shutt down from now ?

I think that if only 50% or 30% of the accmailers send a mail to the owners they will
revert if they can.

And better yet for any lasi accmailer, if you just put two or three lines with the
request for the server's owner, so
the lassi accmailer only will need to forward the mail to the server's owners address.

For example, I proposse the following:
=========================================
To: owner one
cc: owner two, owner three

Subject: XXX mail server

Body:
Dear XXX server's owners

Please could you reinstitute the XXX mail server because
me and a lot of people who hast not direct on line access
to Internet need very much of it.... (....)

=============================================

I am sure that it would better if the mail of each accmailer would be diferent , but
in any case, the quantity of
mails will be the most important parameter.

If we, the accmaillers, do not take an active position about the problem of the
servers that shutt down, and all
of we wait that any other make the requests and solve the problems, one of these days
the Net Services
Statistics'message will be empty. And this black day is coming !!

If we could save only one mail server we must do it.
Anybody that, in any time, had only email access must do it.

Accmailers, Please SEND A MESSAGE to the server owners !

And again, Good Idea, Gerry.

Numbers in reply are suitable only if you are sure that the page
didn't change between requests. Newsserver continually gets
new postings and deletes oldest ones in order to free disk space.
So you should request postings by the "SEND <Message-Id>" commands.
Take Message-Ids (strings with "@" inside) from list of links at
bottom of Agora's reply. I never did it, so don't know must you enclose
each Message-Id into angle brackets or not (help-file is not clear).
Well, try both with and without angle brackets.

If it doesn't work then next time cite list of links and your
SEND commands.

Be ready that some postings disappear before you request them,
you'll get (possibly unclear) error messages.

Perhaps there is some thing wrong with them?

GZIP should have gotten you from .TGZ to .TAR, than you should have been
able to UNTAR that to the individual files. SOME versions of gzip will
also untar, but this is not standard.

}I use W98 and outlook express.

Will OE allow you to select multiple messages (try both shift+click and
ctrl+click, they work slightly different) then select save? UUDEVIEW (or
UUDEWIN?) should be able to decode that file.

If you know the name of the file that OE uses to store mail in your
inbox, you may be able to directly run UUDEVIEW on that. Worth a try.

I like uudeview's flexibility, but it is S-L-O-W.

The top of the uuencoded file contains the name of the encoded file. The
decoder creates the original file, with the same name. No mater what was
in the file.

There are many uudecode.exe programs around. They are not all the same.
The better ones can decode a multi-part file that may be in one, or
split in many input files. Some can recognize and decode XX as well as
UU encodings. The instructions for use will be different for different
versions.

TRY: running the program with -? or /? as the only parameter, or with no
parameters. (If it appears to lock up with no parameters, then try
typing a [ctrl+z] character and enter (return) key.) If there is any
built in help, that should activate it.

I hope this helps some.

I'll try to do this from now on...

I would change your proposed form to something more like this:
=========================================
To: owner one
cc: owner two, owner three

Subject: XXX (agora, webmail, ftpmail, archie, etc.) server

Body:
Dear XXX (server's) owners

I'm a member of the Accmail (Accessing the Internet via Email) mailing
list. Most members of this list like myself only have access to the
Internet via email methods. Your server provides a valuable service
to me as well as others and is really needed. Please try to

(from here on say what you would like done. For instance,
make it accessible by email or fix or repair it or start the service
again or something along similar lines).

Good question. I don't think I've ever seen source code for these. They
usually are part of the kernel so I would guss you would have to get the
kernel code to see how they where implemented. Linux and FreeBSD would
be good bets to try.

A good place to start is the Linux Cross-Reference Project (LXR)
http://lxr.linux.no/

Hypertext links to Linux and FreeBSD source code. Don't really know what
to tell you email only users but the on-line web pages are truly
astounding.
