Dear Azeem,

I had explored the possibilities with Yahoo! Mail by way of www4mail server
back in June this year and some more times after that. (Last was sometime
in August, I think). I was targeting to see if I could login & download
unread mails from the Inbox of my Yahoo mail account.

When one logs in to Yahoo Mail, the welcome message page has, in addition
to the links for mail related activities, links to other services such as
Yahoo! Auction, PIM... etc. I never tried to ACCMAIL access those other
services; and I had also not tried some of the links for mail related
activities like "Compose", "Addresses"....

The links I tried were :

1) To log in using the form from either <http://mail.yahoo.com> or
<http://mail.yahoo.co.uk>
(Both are like mirrors - my yahoo mail address has "yahoo.co.uk" after
@ sign, perhaps because while setting my Yahoo Mail account online, I had
chosen English (UK) english as the language of my choice. However, I can
log in through either of "yahoo.com" and "yahoo.co.uk" - the same user name
and password are acceptable through both login forms).
2) To fetch "Inbox"
3) To fetch "Folders"
4) From Inbox , fetch a unread mail listed in the Inbox to read

Based on trials till middle of August '99 my findings are :

Log in to Yahoo! Mail can be successful via www4mail server of ICTP
(Trieste) but fails via that of Bellanet. The response messages from the
Bellanet server were the same "Error Setting Cookie" page that you have
found. I never tried the third one : <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ( I had
then understood from posting of Clement Onime and Lena that only the
Trieste server has some support for cookies but not the other two).

When Log-in gets established via the Trieste server, fetching of the Inbox
& Folders were also possible, and I had success with these, two or three
times. But these activities can easily get delayed a lot, and / or end up
failing many a times, because of not meeting some time deadlines for reply
commands reaching back Yahoo. I find that there are two types of time
deadlines - first is the time limit for waiting by Yahoo before requesting
password for verifying - this waiting period can be set by the account
holder (via Account Information, I think). But whatever is that time
limit, if the www4mail reaches back Yahoo after that time, then Yahoo would
respond requesting to enter password for verifcation - causing a wastage of
one transmission. The second time deadline is the Expiration time for a
login session, the default for which is 8 hours. After that 8 hours, Yahoo
would "forget" all the cookies doled out by it to a log-in client, and it
would necessiate a Re-login to start again. (I understand that our
www4mail server at Trieste however would keep those cookies for 30 days -
what a waste of server's storage spaces !) So if the Trieste server gets
overloaded, as it seems to be the case very often, then chances are very
very high for encountering a log-in expiry.. and I did experience such time
wasting failures many times.

I have twice tried the last but the most important step of fetching a mail
listed in the Inbox - and both times it FAILED - The error message is
from the Trieste www4mail server itself : "Error 400 - Unknown request -
This mail does not contain any valid request". So apparently something
goes wrong with the browser generated message (- generated when a Inbox
listed mail is marked and "Get Selected Documents" pressed).

I think even if the aforementioned error can be avoided by way of some work
around and fetching a mail from the Inbox becomes feasible, the ACCMAIL
approach for fetching mail from Yahoo would be still unreliable and time
wasting. The response time of the www4mail server would be the major
bottleneck. And for those reasons I had not persisted further.

Yes, there are many. The www4mail servers offers us more than 1 MB per day.
Although some of them limit us to no more than 100 requests per week.

By the way, did you know that we can also use the princeton bitftp server
to get more than 1 MB? I used it once to get a file that amounted to more
than 6 MB. We must be sure though that our mailboxes can hold that much
because if our mailboxes ever become full, it will bounce back to the
server and there is no way we can get parts with the princeton bitftp
server. That's why I now use the www4mail servers because I can always tell
it to retrieve only parts of what I'm asking even though I know that my
mailbox can hold so much data but hey, you never know......

And oh, I almost forgot (malapit nang makalimutan)..... :-) You asked how
to use these servers? You can get the help files by writing to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] with help in the body of your message.

No. None that I know of. But I'm still using it to this day to fill out
forms. But l bet I can also do this with the www4mail servers.

Good luck and good afternoon, Kelvin. :-)

Not so. It sends files of up to 17 megabytes. A soon as you go over 1
megabyte you are blocked for *further* requests that day.

Postscript is a page description language (PDL) developed by Adobe
Systems originally for the Apple computer. PostScript is primarily a
language for printing documents on laser printers, but it can be adapted
to produce images on other types of devices. PostScript is the standard
for desktop publishing because it is supported by imagesetters, the very
high-resolution printers used by service bureaus to produce camera-ready
copy.

Under Windows, Unix, VMS and OS/2 you can use Ghostscript.

Most servers have some form of a "size" or "split" command that will
break the item in to parts. However, for mailbox size, not message size,
you need to use a server that supports a "parts" command, so that you can
get only as many parts as will safely fit in your mailbox at a given
time. The juno 1MB limit allows a file of up to about 600K, before
encoding. Larger files need to be gotten in parts, as well as split.

Good Luck!

Subject: Re: Sending Email with picture without attachment

Gad Alexander <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> asked:

>We know that a picture can be attached to an Email. However we
>know the risk of opening an attachment of an Email.

This is *identical* to the one that you asked on Help-Net.

Here goes a more detailed answer.

Attachments are only risky IF and *ONLY* if they cause your
computer to carry out instructions that they carry (for example,
over-writing your operating system) OR cause your computer to
carry out other code that is already on your computer that can
cause damage (for example, causing FDISK or FORMAT to run).

Typically such files are considered to be "program" files, *.EXE
or *.COM (which would account for almost ALL "viruses" and
"worms"). Picture files, *.jpg, *.bmp, *.gif, *.tif, *.ico,
etc., are opened by programs, such as your broswer or graphics
program, thus they are safe to open. Movies, *.avi, *.mpg, *.mov,
etc., also require an external program to open them and are safe.
Sound files, *.mpg, *.wav, *.mid, etc., need a program to play
them and thus are safe. Compressed/library files, *.zip, *.arc,
*.zoo, *.arj, etc., can contain any file type within them. The
files that are conatined in compressed files can be safe or
dangerous, depending on what type they are.

A FREE virus checker that is available by ACCMail methods has
just released a new version. F-PROT is available at:

ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/virus/fp-306.zip
ftp://ftp.simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/virus/fp-306.zip
http://www.simtel.net/pub/simtelnet/msdos/virus/fp-306.zip

And mirrors of these sites should have F-PROT soon.

Also there is a mail-server (avoid using it if you can).
For further help about the mail-server, send a message to
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" containing the following in the body:
        send help
For more info and the latest version number you can use an agora
server to finger [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

>I tried to send per Email a picture I have in my computer. I
>can do it only with pictures which are in html-Format. I sent
>the pictures to my address and it came back. With the pictures!
>Not as a attachemt.

Any picture file that is sent via e-mail IS an attachment. How
your e-mail program handles it doesn't matter.

HTML isn't a picture format. It can reference other files that
are pictures, but it isn't. It maybe that the e-mail that you
sent had the HTML code that referenced the file on your machine.
For example, if the file is C:\windows\programs\myprog\myprog.gif
and you send yourself a message that has the HTML code that
references that file your e-mail program can then display it
without ever having sent the actual file.

>My question:
>Is it possible also to send a picture in bmp-format per Email?
>And in other formats?

You can attach any file format you want. The only pictures that
could be risky is a file that is a self-displaying, for example
if you were unfortunate enough to get HAPPY99.EXE and ran it you
would see the fireworks and get infected.
