I bear unfortunate news about the Binky remailer. Binky, which has
operated for almost four years, is starting to fail.
The problem lies in the server that hosts it, a machine named
"Boas". In the last six months, Boas or it's network has gone down
several times, and each time it has taken longer and longer to get
it running again. Currently, as of this writing, Boas is down and
has been down for almost 24 hours (at least) now.
Binky was set up in the late '90s by University of Minnesota student
Tyler Akins, who installed Linux on a spare box in the anthropology
department, and wrote all the scripting to operate the Binky
remailer as well as the junoaccmail.org "Autobot". BUT, Tyler has
since graduated, and lives a ways away from the college. Due to his
career and the distance, he is seldom able to administer Boas.
Plus, he is beginning to lose interest in Binky.
I consider Binky to be in it's final days, and would not consider it
to last much longer. Although Binky is technically still in service,
the system hosting it is growing increasingly unreliable, and Binky
may not be maintained at all much longer. All users of Binky ought
to seek alternate remailers.
Status of various Boas services:
Binky: DOWN
I have temporarily re-routed the binky forwarder at junoaccmail.org
to an autoresponder explaining that Binky is down.
Autobot: DOWN
For Juno users, the special address [EMAIL PROTECTED]
is still working. It used to forward the emails to Binky for
disposal, however I have taken over that function entirely at the
junoaccmail.org server. HOWEVER, it appears that Juno may no longer
be honoring this, so it might not work anymore. But you're welcome
to try.
