SPDIF output works fine for me with 2.6.31-20-generic Acer timeline 5810T, ubuntu 9.10 (again, after a bad experience with 10.4 alpha) I have options snd-hda-intel model=basic in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf after reading that https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto The output of cat /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/info says id: ALC269 Analog
